stopped BF and her eczema disappeared....
« on: January 21, 2009, 02:28:17 am »
Hi,

Just curious if anyone had any ideas about this, Spencer has been BF and formula fed since 6 weeks, developed eczema on her back and arms, which I was using Spectro Eczema Care for kids on. The cream was keeping it from getting worse, but not really getting rid of it.

At about 4 months I started slowly weaning her onto formula and noticed that as I was down to 1 or 2 BF, her eczema started getting better and now that I've weaned entirely it is completely gone! What gives? was it something I was eating? I had cut out obvious dairy as it gave her bad gas pains, but still had hidden dairy. Also worth noting that I gave her some oatmeal to try a couple weeks ago and her eczema flared up horribly in 2 hours - red and really itchy.

I'm trying to get in to see a new doctor, so I'll have to ask her too, but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

Soy Formula, we had tried regular formula first, but it didn't agree with her at all. Has been on soy since she was 8 weeks old.

I definitely think it was something in your diet!  I'm glad she can tolerate soy.  She may just not be able to tolerate milk/dairy.  I know my son will get bad eczema if he eats something he is allergic to, like wheat, oats, barley, egg.  It usually springs up the next day.  So it could be the dairy OR it very well could've been something else in your diet.  But since you said she did really bad on dairy before I'd say it was most likely that.  My son cannot handle oats, has extremely bad reaction, he is allergic to it.  Definitely speak to your doctor about that.  I'm glad she's doing better though!

Thanks Melanie,

I thought it might be the dairy, but I also eat alot of oatmeal myself, so I wondered if that could have done it too. Not that I want to feed her oatmeal again to find out! I have a nephew with nut and egg allergies, so I tend to go with caution when feeding her.

I agree it does sound like it is something in your diet. I also am glad that your dd can tolerate soy formula.

Okay, so I noticed that after I fed her sweet potato she got a couple spots of eczema on her tummy! That isn't a highly allergenic food, is it? (she's also eaten pears, prunes and banana before) Should I stick with the pears or keep trying new foods?

I know when I first was giving more pear to my son he started to break out in eczema on his face.  After a week it went away and never came back.  My allergist said that sometimes it's just the body's reaction to something in the food, like citric acid in certain fruits, but they get use to it.  I have found that when it comes to pears and apples.  It could be just that.  Usually sweet potatoes are pretty safe, but it is possible.  Does she seem fine other than that?  If it is a small amount and doesn't seem to bother her you could keep giving it to her and see if it goes away or gets worse.

Yes, she's fine otherwise....sweet potato is her favourite so far! She doesn't eat much more than a tablespoon at a time yet.  Gotta run, I think I hear her!

Thanks,
Heidi

Hopefully it will go well.  That's my son's favorite too!  Of course he always has an orange glow to his skin now, but it's all good. lol
