Is it SA? or 2 to 1 switch? or what??
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:14:24 am »
Amelia is 11 mo old and about 3 weeks ago she finally has started STTN. She didn't eat at night, too - she just drop it all of the sudden and just started sleep thru.
I was soooo happy.
And suddenly, about week ago, she started to wake again, but couldn't resettle herself back to sleep (she used to do it, she's an independend sleeper since 4 mo old).
Now when she wakes at night (it can be somewhere between 1.30 am and 4.30) she screams and cry like calling for help. She can chat as well. Then she's quiet and she seems to be asleep for a while and suddenly it starts all over again. And sometimes she does sounds wide awake.
When I go to her she seems to need my presence to go back to sleep. I put my hand on her back and she calms herself down. It could take somewhere between 30 min to 2 hrs :/
Last night, when I was there, standing by the crib, I noticed that she moves a lot - roll on one side and another, kicks and moves all around the crib. And she cries usually while she moves, like it disturbs her go back to sleep.
I don't know how to deal with this.
Should I just go to her, calm little bit and leave her alone? Or maybe be there for her? Does it look like SA? She's fine during the day when I leave her for a while to play. She was fine all nights long for  last 2 weeks.
What's going on?
She has finally started do crawl about month ago and she tries to walk by herself (she has started it before crawling).
Her naps are little mess, too. She has started to refuse nap in the morning (so we took her into the stroller, where she could asleep right away). The second nap she usually takes in the stroller, while she had problems with it, too. This nap could last as long as 1.5 hrs.
Right now she sleeps twice a day for 45 mins.
I'm afraid to make a switch to one nap only, while we had such a problems with older daughter. She has made a switch quite soon (when she was 8 or 9 mo old) and has dropped the afternoon nap at age 2.
I wanted to keep Amelia for 2 naps as long as possible, but I know I can't do it at all cost.
She's usually up for the day around 7-7.30 am, eats 3 solid meals, drinks 2 bottles and takes 2 naps (the total of sleep during the day is somewhere between 1,15 and 2 hrs).

Please ladies, what do you think?
I really need your advice.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,

Hugs. I hope we can help get you back to STTN soon - I know what an achievement that can be!!!

You did name a few things that are pretty common as causes of NWs, one of them being developmental milestones, and another being SA. It certainly could have to do with either. I was also wondering if you think there is a possibility that she is teething? That is often most painful at night.

I am thinking that the method you'll want to try for the NWs is walk in/walk out. Are you familiar with this? Here is some more info: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80750.0

Further, regarding the 2-1 switch, it is true that 11 months is pretty early (though not impossible) to do the switch. If you are able to extend it though, that is certainly better. I suspect from the 2 x 45 min naps that she might be a little OT, and the 1 nap would mean very long A times and probably even more OT. Personally although my ds goes to sleep fairly easily in the stroller, it's been very hard to get him to sleep longer than 45 minutes at a time even if I'm walking quickly the entire time (and yes I used to do that regularly ::)). Maybe you can take her best nap and try that one again from home, perhaps doing W2S.
Also have you read this post before? Maybe helpful as well?: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=89906.0

Thanks jess :)
I'm responding so late, cause my baby is sick actually, and I had a lot to do.
I will try Wi/Wo maybe tonight, while she was so horrible last night. She was ok till 1 am, when she woke up and couldn't settle down. She screamed than was quiet, than screamed again... I thought maybe she was in pain, she's teething actually. Tonight I'll try some med.
I was there, tried to send her back to sleep. Picked her up and walked with her in my arms. The minute I put her down, she was up again. My husband did the same, then he walked out of the room. I gave her a little bottle and at 2.30 am she went back to sleep and slept till 7.30 am.
I don't want to make her depend from carrying her around, so I'll try wi/wo.
Now she goes down quite easily for her 1st nap around 4 hrs after waking (it's somewhere between 11.15 and 12), sleeps around an hour (sometimes 30 mins) and the 2nd nap she has in the stroller around 3.30-4 pm.
Those second nap messes little bit with the 12/12 hr schedule, while she wakes quite late (ex 5 pm). Her bedtime is 3 hrs after the nap, around 8 pm., 8.15-8.45 she's asleep, few NWs and she's up for the day 7.30-8.
But she's not ready to drop it, I suppose...
Is 12/12 hrs schedule so important at this phase?

I puta her down at 8, she was asleep at 8.30 pm. At 9.15 she was up SCREAMING :(
I went there - she was kicking, crying and screaming.
I don't know what to do anymore :( Even when I pick her up doesn't always seems to satisfy her. And I can't carry her around all night long - gosh, she's heavy!
I gave her some medication - thought maybe she's in pain from teeth...
Carried her for few mins, she felt asleep, lied her down, went out. And she's about to cry again :(
I want to cry, too...
Maybe she got used to carrying her and now she wants me to do that? But she settles herself down at nap easily...
Could it be night mare? Doesn't look like night terror, while she's awake...
I think I should prepare myself for taugh night tonight.

I just checked there. Glad she finally slept through last night. You are getting great advice from becky so far so I will watch from a distance there for a bit and see how it goes there. Hugs xx

You don't have to watch from distance, please, come closer - any idea is gladly welcome ;)
To me it looks more like preparing to switch, but maybe I'm wrong. You guys here have tons of experience, so here I am! ;) The other thing is I am the mom, so... ;)
Anyway, please share your thoughts with me - I really need it.
