Cluster feeding
« on: January 25, 2009, 19:53:15 pm »
I have been cluster feeding for a few weeks now. Our routine generally goes 7,10,1,4,6,8,10.30/11. A few days ago ds was getting really fussy at bedtime routine so I was giving him his 6pm feed and topping him off at 7 to settle him before bed (before this he had 6pm feed and then bedtime routine), i was then pushing the 2nd cluster feed to 8.30 instead of 8 to get him to take more as it would only have been an hour since he had last had a wee bit of milk.

 Yesterday we slept in and I didn't start my EASY day until 8.30am (long lie was blissful  ;D ). I just continued the day as normal, feeding every 3 hours but got thrown in the evening when I realised I hadn't clustered early evening and had no time to do it after 8pm bedtime as we also DF about 10.30/11. I went to bed with much trepidation but the was nicely surprised by a 5.15am wake up!!  ;D(usually 3.30/4) Anyways we are back on a 7am start and 7pm bedtime today. I gave him about 3.5oz at 6 and left the last oz for bedtime routine but he then took another 3.5oz!!! I was thinking of doing a 2nd cluster feed at 8.30pm but worried. Can this feeding schedule turn him into a snacker. When cluster feeding do you do the top off at bedtime? Or should it just be the feed at 6 the off to bed for 7? In regards to yesterday when I didn't CF and he slept for a longer stretch, is this something to do with dropping that feed or just a nice coincidence?  ??? ??? ???

7 weeks tomorrow. Went back to a full feed at 6 then bedtime routine tonight ( no top off at 7) and then 2 nd cluster at 8pm. He settled ok. So i think we'll just hang off with quitting the clusters for a couple of weeks. The only thing is his df's have reduced slightly by about an oz ish (apart from the night we didn't give 2nd cluster, he took a good amount). Was thinking maybe thats why he went slightly longer that night.  ???

Just going to see what happens tonight i guess...  :) x

btw how does routine go when you drop cluster, if my routine is 7,10,1,4.... next feed would be due at 7 (bedtime). Would he then have catnap, bath, bedtime routine, then bottle? The that means no A after E iykwim?

Yes I would wait and see what happens.  It might have been a one off.  Cluster feeds are recommended until 8 weeks anyway.  After that baby is supposed to be able to go without them.  But you can still keep them if they work for you.

As for routine without cluster feeds, the last part of the day will be like this;

E 4pm
S 5-5.45 (catnap)
A bath and other quiet activities
E 7
S after feed
