Sleep/nap issues

Is the SHH... PAT method the only/best way to get a text book 4 week old to sleep in his cradle. He sleeps very well EVERYWHERE else. Also, he has a bit of reflux so we were told to hold him upright for 30 minutes so of course he falls asleep in our arms...any thoughts?

It's pretty common for a refluxer to resist sleeping flat ie. in the cradle or what not. Laying flat aggravates the reflux and makes sleeping not so fun. :(  Can you elevate the head of the cradle a little bit? That helps a ton!

Is he on medication for the reflux?

I also have a 4 week old and from reading the book have come to learn that patting the back is bad for a reflux baby, how do you work around this for the SHH/Pat method???

You could try stroking the back instead of patting, or patting the butt?

I did what I called a shh/hold with Colin. He would be on his back in the crib, and I would lay one arm across his knees and the other across his chest - just resting, not actually putting pressure on him, and then shhh. That worked great for us and we did that for a long time. :)

So if my baby wakes up after 45 minutes should I use shhh-pat to get him to sleep for the next 45...so it is around a 1 1/2 hour nap? He is elevated in his cradle.

If possible, yes, try extending the naps. Lots of people (myself included) have only limited success with extending naps and only get longer naps with a routine tweak. Do you want to post your EASY routine?

Anyone have advise on Shh/pat while using a wedge?  She's so swaddled and tucked in her wedge (she's a roller at 4 weeks), if I try to put her on her side I have to lift her up and out of the wedge in the crib which wakes her up.

I've tried holding a hand on her stomach but that doesn't work.  I really need to shh/stroke due to the reflux, but once again cannot turn her on her side without waking her up.   help

My DD2 was/is a refluxer and I pat/shh'd with great success with her when I modified it so that she was on her back (elevated in crib with sleep positioner holding her in place) and I just held my hand gently on her chest while I shh'd.  I had to be careful to avoid eye contact so as not to stimulate her, but that worked well.  HTH! :)
