Meat Purees??
« on: January 29, 2009, 13:14:29 pm »
Hi everybody,

Since ds has started being fed solely finger food (at 10 months he refused anything on a spoon  ::)) I have had trouble getting any meat into him and I am worried about his iron and protein intake. I think it is the texture that he doesn't like as he always used to eat it when it was in a puree and will eat it most of the time now if it is mushed up in a pasta sauce.

I was thinking about possibly trying him with meat purees again now that he can spoon feed himself to see if he will eat it that way and just put it on his plate along with the rest of his dinner. What do you ladies think? Is he too old for me to be thinking about going back to purees? Just playing around with the idea at the moment.

Thanks,
Chrissie x

If you are concerned about protein, perhaps for now give him veggies that are high in protein?  Can he eat eggs yet?  They are high in protein.  I can understand now wanted to take a step back with the purees.  I would just try other means to get the protein in the meantime.

Beans and eggs are also good sources of protein :)

What about ground meats?  Meatloaf, put it in spaghetti sauce, etc.

To be honest if you are worried and you think going back to meat purees will work for now then I would do it especially if he is doing well eating other foods. I supose I am slightly clouded in my judgement though as I have 1 child who has a severe food aversion so I am probably more willing to do these kind of things than most. I just believe that some things are not worth worrying about if there is a simple solution. If you start off with meat purees you can start to make them ore lumpy slowly and them move to ground meats ect.

You could try the meatloaf idea, nice and soft, also, my ds tolerated soft burgers, that sort of texture fairly well. I did use a food mill/grinder for a bit and mixed the beef in with plain yogurt and he gobbled that up. Small pieces of meatballs, that sort of thing went down easily. You could try diced lunchmeats- turkey, chicken- they are usually very soft, sort of high in sodium, but a small amount won't hurt. As long as ds is taking other foods well and shows no texture probs, then you could try it. FWIW, I don't think pureed meats would do any harm. He'll still be moving forward with finger feeding, and having one pureed item shouldn't make things go backwards, IYKWIM.

Hi all, thanks for the advice.

This is probably a silly question but how do you make meatloaf? You don't really come across it much over here in England. I was also thinking of trying to make burgers to see how they go down. Sometimes I just feel a bit fed up when I spend ages making things and it just get refused  :-\. But having toddlers yourselves I guess you must know how that feels.

A couple of days ago I tried him with some sliced chicken in a sandwich. He seemed to love it and ate the whole slice. He was even picking apart the sandwich to take the chicken out to eat and left the bread and butter (it is usually the other way around). Then the next day I tried it again and he didn't eat a single piece. It kept on being put in his mouth but then being spat out again  ::). It's just so frustrating.

He does eat eggs and loves them. He has them probably 3-4 times a week. But I have noticed lately that he has refused it a couple of times so I'm wondering if he is getting bored of it. I don't like eggs myself so I'm stuck in a rut with how to prepare them so he normally ends up just having it scrambled. He did have a mini home-made quiche tonight and he loved that and gobbled it all up. (I've just realised I had also put some ham in there and he ate that too!!!). I just don't know what is going on  ::).

I think I'm going to leave the purees for a bit and just try and find some recipes he likes.

Thanks again.

I've had good luck with this one.

I also have one that you cook in a muffin tin, so it makes individual servings (& cooks faster!).  I'll have to look up that recipe, though.

Chrissie, Meatloaf=1 pound of ground beef, breadcrumbs, 1 egg, spices to your taste, ketchup/worcestershire sauce, onion/pepper if you like. Bake at 350 for about an hour. Basically, mix meat with an egg, some sort of starch- some people use crushed corn flakes or left over rice instead of bread, mix in any veggies you like, spices and put into a loaf pan or shape into a mound on a flat sheet. Wicked easy, fast and tasty.

I make meatloaf too, it's DH's favorite :)  I add a little dried sage, it gives a nice flavor.

We found that meatloaf and even meatballs made in the oven are a great hit.  Also, does your DS like to dip his food into anything?  We found out that DS loves ketchup so I started experimenting with other dips (honey mustard, ranch, etc) and he loves it also.  He'll eat chicken all by itself with some honey mustard on it.

Or course eggs, tofu, and peanut butter are great too.

meat balls work great over here! and you can get ground chicken and do the same! i just discovered this actually.we've been having a similar issue.ds is 15 months and only has 6 teeth -all up front -and if he can't mash it well between gums, he spits it all out! well, sometimes he spits it out anyway.but the meatballs work great! they're nice and moist and soft and you can hide ANYTHING in them.add an egge and some breadcrumbs to help hold them together and whatever else you want. cheese, tiny bits of veggies, etc.
also, try hardboiled egg. maybe he just needs a switch. i did scrambled egg alot at breakfast and he started refusing them, so i put a little spin on it.

i got great recepies here when i was making my own baby food. they have a good recepie for shepherds pie that has a layer for beef -grnd i believe - mashed potatoes, and chesse on top. ds loved that too. and the potatoes help it go down!
