How long does it take for allergen to react
« on: January 29, 2009, 17:34:07 pm »
We tried out wheat the other day.  I ate it for supper and fed him twice after that plus once during the night.  He was fine, slept well but then the next day, probably starting about lunch time, he started to get really fussy and have some gastrointestinal issues.  Is it possible that a reaction wouldn't show up until almost a day later?  I guess I expected a more immediate reaction.  I feel like it's hard to know if it's the food or something else (he has reflux and is also gassy do to an overactive letdown).

Hi there, from what I've read on the subject I would say it is a possibility.   Depending on a person's metabolism and what they consume the food they eat could take an hour to 24 hours to reach the breastmilk.  So it is a possibility that your son may be reacting to the wheat.  You could hold off on the wheat for a couple of weeks and try it again if you really want to be certain, or just avoid it all together until much later.  Hope that helps :)

I'd agree. I've never quite worked out how long it takes Kitty to react to a food, but I'm almost certain it's rarely been an instant thing for us. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight.  As a follow-up question...how long should I wait before trying another food?  I want to make sure the wheat "reactions" are entirely out of his system before trying something else.  This all feels so confusing.  DS1 is MPI which we didn't figure out until he was 4 mo at which point I eliminated all MPs and it took 2 weeks to clear everything out.  This time we've been doing the elimination diet so I'm a little more uncertain.  AFter you try a food does it take 2 weeks to "clear out"?

P.S.  I hate allergies!!

I'd probably wait about 2 weeks, or at least until they seem completely back to normal.  That's usually what I do too.

I would wait the 2 weeks and then you can be sure your ds is not still reacting to the wheat.
