HELP- OH NO! Nick climbed and fell out of crib!
« on: January 30, 2009, 21:56:30 pm »
:o Just got a call from DH, Nick escaped. :'( He put him in there for a minute to go to the first floor, heard a booom and crying! Holy cow, what am I going to do?!?!?
You KNOW he's at the high end of busy, active, spirited. You know he fights sleep!
Does this mean BBB for sure? DO I have to do this tonight? How do I do that?
His crib converts, but how do I do this? help help help me I'm freaking out! :o

ohno Cathie. Hugs.

not sure what to do but feel s like he mighht need some adjusting time.

maybe you could try putting cushions or a spare duvet beside sthe be dso incase he escapes again there is a softer landing if you don't move him to a BBB. IMHO one escape does not mean be all end all.
9 and 6, oh boy!

Golly, I hope that would work, I'm so not ready for this! Anyone keep their LO in the crib after a fall successfully? Maybe he'll be too scared? Nah, not Nick. Sigh. Too persistent. Thanks Mukta!

Breathe!

and {{{{hugs}}}}, we transitioned Masyn to her BGB on Dec 26 (convertible crib, too) Do you think he'll just keep doing it? if so, I think it might be time for the BBB or at the very least some pillows to catch him.

We basically stripped the room of everything but the bed and her fan (hidden behind the crib, which is on an angle), took the knobs off the closet doors, took out all the toys except her bedtime animals and put a childproof doorknob cover on....and will be using a gate if she ever figures that out!

Honestly, it went better than I thought it would, but she's a year older than Nick and had been telling us that she sleeps in a big bed at Grandma's house and at daycare, so we figured she was ready. Yikes, I feel for you, if she had done that at that age.......I hope it goes okay, whatever you do!

Heidi -thanks- yeah, he just seems so little to be in a BBB. He's just now able to open doors too. ARGH. We do have a gate at the top of the stairs...I'm thinking maybe I'll drag out my old huge thick featherbed and put that outside his crib for tonight and see what happens. If he does it again, well, I'll just pray really hard and go for the BBB. Gulp. I know he's got some advanced skills, he's big for his age, etc... but come on! I'm not ready!

Good, keep up the breathing...

The featherbed sounds like a great idea, and I'm crossing my fingers for you that he won't try it again......gotta run, someone's up! Good luck!

Thanks Stacy- I DO NOT want to do BBB yet!!! DH is very handy and may be able to rig up the crib lower, that's a good thought... He's got a growbag, but not for naps/quiet time, etc. His crib is sleigh bed style and does not fit the tents- I love the idea- maybe I can search for one that is compatible- ugh. you have no idea how freaky the idea is of Nick loose in his room at night, or perhaps, you do!

Yeah the scary thing is that he has skills, you know? He's a total tinkerer and would disassemble most of his room if he could. sigh. what is it w/boys and their love of all things mechanical? He is able to follow a 2 step command easily, but the safety awareness, nah, and even if he is aware, he's excited by the problem solving it poses, lol/eek.
Okay, I will use bags for naps/bedtime and tell DH NOT to put him in the crib even for a minute without it! We really don't need a broken arm/collarbone/neck... I've got to go home now, I will post with updates tomorrow!

I would go with the grobag too, and if he unzips it, put it on back to front.  That gave us a few extra months with Zach.

Then mid sleeptraining (2am!) i heard a bang and he'd thrown himself out headfirst, and continued to try to do so for the rest of the night even though I decided to sleep next to the cot to ensure he didn't.  So that was BBB for sure, at about 23 months.  Most of his room is safe for him, although I remove his lamp each night as i really don't want him switching it on and off at night.  He can open the door easily but we have a gate at the top of the stairs - I just leap out of bed really fast when i hear the door handle go!

Oh CATHIE!!!!!  :o :o :o

You have a proper little mischief maker on your hands there!!

Just to reassure you, if you DO have to resort to the BBB....speak to Paula, Abi is in one already and she is younger than N...but then, not so spirited  :P

I hear ya on opening doors, J started to do that about 3 weeks ago...he's tall  ::)

Cathie, when Colin did something similar we took the crib apart and drilled new holes much lower, so that when we put the crib back together the mattress was just barely off the floor. It bought us plenty of time until we were all ready for the BBB transition.

Cathie, I was also going to suggest using the grobag for as long as possible, until he figures out how to open it. The idea of putting the crib lower is great! Never heard of that before. I would also want him in there for a while longer if it was me. Grobag bought us a lot of extra time, and by the time she'd figured out about opening the bags, she'd forgotten about getting out of the crib... at least for a while. Good luck!!!

Hi everyone- golly, but you are all so precious to respond to my call for help!
Well,on the way home from work I got pulled over by an officer and given a warning- what a night...sigh. By the time I got home I was shaking! LOL- PMS+climber+police=bad nerves, I guess.
Anyway, we're not sure if the climbing out was intentional or a mistakenly over the sides while jumping...When I got home Nick informed me of the events by shouting "BOOM" and then doing his fake cry. He has not tried it again, yet. DH, bless him, was telling him, "remember not to do that again, you went BOOM" and Nick seems to agree. Whew. We did put the huge featherbed on the floor, doubled up. We will be using the grobag and looking into lowering the crib even farther.
On the upside, Nick slept from 8PM-7:45AM which is very rare and very much appreciated by me!
I'll keep you posted over the next few days as I watch my ultraspirited mischiefmaker very closely for any attempts at escaping.
Thank you thank you thank you for walking me through this.

They are cute when they communicate like that!
BTW- the door thing is a challenge, yes? Always exciting!
