Not napping at the weekends........causes EWs
« on: February 01, 2009, 11:55:31 am »
Just wanted to run this past you ladies to see what you would do in our situation.

I have recently gone back to work, so Harrison is now at his childminders 5 days a week. He had been going 3 days a week for the previous 3 months in anticipation of this, so was already settled and happy there and sleeping very well.

He STILL sleeps there very well, he is swapping back and forth between 2 and 1 nap days - seems to do 1 or the other for a few weeks at a time. He does OK on 1 nap - sometimes sleeping for 2.5 to 3 hours, sometimes only 2, but he copes with the afternoon without a catnap and goes to bed easily at 6.30.

The problem is the weekends..........the last 3 weekends, he will NOT sleep longer than 45 minutes for his 1st nap (and we do roughly the same A times, mostly 4 to 4.5 hours) and then its a 50/50 call if he'll take a 2nd nap at all, unless we go out in the car. Now I don't necessarily have a problem with this in itself in that I know he gets a chance to cath up during the week, and he seems happy enough for the rest of the day and mostly sleeps through still.......except I klnow from past patterns that when he's OT he only sleeps 11 hours, so that means that if he's gone to bed at 6.30, he's up at 5.30. So poor old Mummy and Daddy are having to do early starts at the weekend  :( :(

Would you do anything to try and change it, or just live with it for now. We've tried extending, but it just causes a huge meltdown, and once he's up he's quite happy.

 :D :D That's what my Mum said - its just too exciting when he transitions at 45 minutes and he realises he's at home - its a nice problem to have tbh!

I havn't tried 6 pm, I'm too scared cos that would give us a 5am wake-up if it didn't work :( ::)

Hi ladies - been busy - now back at work full time and don't have half as much time on here asI'd like......

Hmmmm well, same pattern this weekend. Last week we braved a few 6/6.15 bedtimes and he slept 12 hours so that was great. He continued to sleep well at the CMs, doing 1 nap all week, varying between 4 to 4.5 hours first A time, and then 2 to 3 hour naps. So pm A time was along stretch, but he seems to cope OK.

Then Saturday - back to weekend pattern - up at 6.30, 1st nap in textbook style at 11, 11.45 up he comes! Then he dozed off for about 20 minutes out for a walk and while we were having lunch in the pub, waking at about 2, and that was that for the rest of the day. So 6 pm bedtime again, 12 hour sleep til 6 on Sunday and same - 45 minute nap after 4 hours A time. He managed a 20 minute catnap Sun pm....... ::)

So back at CMs on Monday for his now regular catch up - Monday he did 3 hours 10 til 1, no pm sleep, then yesterday we asked her to try and get in a pm sleeep if she could so we could get bedtime back towards 7.........so yesterday he did another 3 hours from 10 til 1 then ANOTHER 45 minutes from 4.15 til 5. So last night bedtime was 7.30 and of course he wasn't too keen on the idea of sleep - went off about 8.15. But then to our frustration we had 30 minute NW from 4.30 til 5 - he put himself back to sleep was just quietly moaning, then woke at 5.45  and that was that despite our best efforts, even bringing him into bed with us didn't cut it - the boy was UP......... ::) ::)

So right now I'm just putting it down to 2 to 1 nap switch, and the fact that at weekends he wants to be up with us. Maybe as the pattern repeats itself the concept of weekends at home will dawn on him and he may decide to sleep, he may not. As long as we can catch up during the week and stop bedtime creeping up too early, I guess we just have to live with it.........

Thanks for following up ladies - any suggestions for what may be behind the madness are welcome!
