Hi

My DS has always been very good at going to sleep, maybe a wee bit of chatting but we used to not hear a thing when we put him down (we have put him down to self settle since he was 7 weeks without props, so he has always done it!).  For his day nap he still goes down like a lamb, no crying or wailing.  A few weeks ago he started crying and screaming at bedtime (we had relatives staying so I thought maybe he would settle back to normal once they had gone) but if anything things have got worse and he now takes between 30 mins and 60 mins of crying and screaming before he goes to sleep.  When you go into comfort him/give him some water he has a brief cuddle then wants to talk and point to your nose and ears etc, cute, usually but not at bed time! We have tried leaving him for the whole crying etc but that doesn't seem to shorten the time.  He generally sleeps between 1.30-2.30 hrs in the day(usually goes down for a nap between 12.30pm and 1pm) and goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps for 12hrs, sometimes a wee bit more.  For the last few weeks he hasn't been waking until 8.00/8.30am as by the time he gets to sleep it is around 8pm, or later.  I have tried to extend his bedtime to 7.30pm and make sure he naps no longer than 1.30hrs (no later than 2.30pm) to see if this would help, but to no avail.  By going to bed at 7.30pm he now isn't alseep some nights until nearly 9pm.  What can I do.  I don't want to be putting him to bed at 8pm, I think it is too late and frankly I want some timeout at that time of night.(I am 15 weeks pregnant) Should I be waking him in the morning earlier than 8.00am?  Sorry for the ramble but am at a loss on what tactic to try.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe he is napping for too long. I had to cut my son's nap down to one hour a day and he now sleeps all night and sleeps to at least 7am. Which before it was several NWs and EWs of 530am. Your son might be at ready to cut his napping down. I am new to this so I know there will be other ladies on here that can help you more.

Hi there,
I think some of it might just be developmental. I know my DD also went through periods of the pointing to nose, ears etc ::) and I think it was a way of testing us to see if we would buy in to it. You could try shortening the nap as pp said, to see if he sleeps better, but otherwise I would just do WI/WO and be firm that it is time to sleep. If he's crying hard for you then do not leave him as that is not a good idea and can make things worse as he gets anxious that you are not there for him, but go in regularly and be firm, and he'll soon learn that bedtime is not for playing. The other thing I could think of was if he's teething at all? That can make bedtime drag out as they find it harder to settle. Have you trid giving pain meds if there are teeth on the way?

Thanks for your advice.  It has been soooo hot and humid here at the moment that none of us can sleep so hopefully when the weather cools down...  It doesn't seem to be teeth (only the last 4 molars to go though), I think it is a developmental thing as his language has just exploded over the last few weeks and it's like his brain is going a million miles an hour.
