Why not skimmed milk?
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:53:36 am »
Hello~

I know that babies should not be given skimmed milk nor semi-skimmed milk.
But I want to know:
Is it just because there's not enough fat in it?
Or drinking that would harm the baby?

As far as I know there is no direct harm in it - the former reason is the applicable one, because growing children need the fat. Remember that if your baby is below 12 months they shouldn't be having cow's milk as a drink, though it's fine in cooking and to mix cereals etc.

HTH!

Thank you!

That means if I'm having skimmed milk products,
he looks at me and wants to have some,
it's ok to give him a few spoons.

Yes, I would think so, as long as the products don't contain other things that aren't advisable (like added sugars, honey, etc.)

Yep, it's just that they need so much more fat to develop and grow and skimmed milk doesn't have it. It still has the nutrients etc so if you are having it and a little boy looks longingly at your food then it's fine.
