Still up for 2-3 hours in the night....
« on: February 05, 2009, 21:08:52 pm »
Hi there

I am still battling with NWs which have been happening for the last 2-3 weeks. Not every night, but most. Can vary between waking as early as 10.30pm through to as late as 3am. Once awake, she screams then won't resettle herself (which she can do... she is an independent sleeper - always has been (now 11.5months) and loves her sleep!). We try everything including WI/WO, paracetamol (teething!), milk, our bed... you name it, we've tried it.

As soon as you go to her, she'll lie back down and suck her thumb. Then at some point, will suddenly sit up again and cry! This goes on for hours and I can't seem to put my finger on the reason why.

Is she having too much or too little daytime sleep?

She naps twice a day - once at around 10.30 for an hour or so and then again at 3/3.30 for an hour or so.

I've tried to identify what is different on the days she does STTN but as yet have not found any common denominators!

Any suggestions?

x

I meant to say, sometimes by the time we bring her in our bed just to try and get a nap ourselves, she tends to perk up and start playing, whistling, singing, clapping, pointing... anything that she thinks is funny!

Despite our tiredness, most nights we can't help but laugh at her ... if we don't laugh, we might cry....we are at desperate stage!!!!

Can you post your routine in EASY format? It's a crazy age for sleep, i think they all go a little loopy just before they turn 1 ;)

Hi there

Loopy is definiately one word for it! ;D

We were up again from 3-5 last night.... crazy! Am so exhausted, everything seems so much worse.... I spend the whole time trying to analyse the cause and think of things to try. Even today... am debating UT vs OT.... surely after 3 weeks of this, she must be OT? The last two nights themselves she has lost out on 5-6 hours sleep. So what do I do today? So far, had to wake her at 7.30 and put her back to bed at 10.15 - she was SO grouchy! And its now 12.05 and she's still asleep - not a peep.... do I wake her? Is letting her sleep going to help or hinder!!??!!! Argh!!!!!

Anyway, enough of that... my routine (albeit she's in nursery 3 days so it does slightly vary but more the case that she sleeps a bit less at nursery due to noise etc!).

Typical day - wake around 7 - plays in cot til 7.30ish
Bottle @ 7.30
Breakfast @ 8.30
Nap @ 10.30 - at home she sleeps for 1hr to 1.5hrs (sometimes I wake her by 12, sometimes she wakes herself between 11.30 and 12.00)

Lunch @ 12
Bottle @ 3
Nap @ 3.30 - at home for 1hr to 1.5hrs (again, most days I have to wake her by 4.30/4.45)

Dinner @ 5
Bottle @ 6.45
Bed @ 7

Wakings are completely random - as early as 10.30 and as late as 4am.

Bit off her milk at the moment - takes approx. 4oz of the 7oz bottle.
Food fine.

Thanks Anna

Wow. really frustrating for you, I feel for you!!
Do you think she might be a bit undertired, and could do with some slightly longer A times? That would probably mean cutting one or other of the naps short, so that you could still fit two naps in. Something to try?

I'd recommend posting over on the Toddler Sleep board too - it's 'officially' for LOs over 12 months, but you might get some helpful feedback.

Thanks Anna

Not sure on the UT - it was something I thought but A) somedays at nursery she only has 45-1hr in the morning and afternoon and B) wasnt sure how to go about shortening naps - which one to shorten, how to still fit the two in / around meals etc.

Will try posting on the Toddler board to see if anyone has any advice.
