Dinner then bath or bath then dinner??
« on: February 09, 2009, 07:56:12 am »
Not sure where to post but mods, feel free to move!!

We always used to do dinner then bath - cause I guess if they get grubby at dinner - then you can just chuck them in the tub!!!!   ;)  But we are stuck in this horrible OT cycle at the moment and the later it gets, the more bath refusal we get.   :-\  So been doing bath quite early.

Not sure if to go back to the old way or keep at the new way!  What happens in your house??  My parents told me they always had to be bathed and dressed in p.j's before there dad got home from work - or there was trouble!!!   :D

Could you fit the bath in in the morning when little one gets up?

Not really Helen, he goes to kindy in the mornings!  Plus he gets pretty grubby during the day and we have a pool (summer time here in Oz!) so has been lots of swimming and stuff through out the day, sand pit etc.

He actually had a nap at kindy today ( :o  :o  :o wonders will never cease!!) so I did dinner then bath and it actually went quite well - no screaming tonight!!   ;)  Just the usual p.j. refusal  ::) but got around that quite quickly tonight!!

We do dinner then bath for the same as your original reasons.  Do what works.  :)

What time do you have dinner and then bath?  We used to have dinner and then wait and do bathtime right before bedtime.  DS1 hated this because he knew it meant the end of the day.  So now we do bath around 6:00-6:30 and then DS1 gets to go back downstairs for some quality time with Daddy while I get DS2 to bed.  It seems to have made things a bit easier.

Shower then dinner here, we found that bath/shower cut into "time with Daddy" once preschool started & it runs much more smoothly if they are showered (baths are rare because I get told they "take too long") before DH comes home... helps us with that 5pm grump too.
As it is Summer we just put the the PJ bottoms (boxers) on & they put the top on at bedtime, so can wipe off any spills, although they are rare.
Our routine is something like
5.30pm shower
6pm dinner
6.45/50 teeth & toilet, followed by stories, or on Mon/Thurs when I walk at 7pm we do stories then teeth & toiletafter I've gone walking.
7.15pm in bed (really between 7 or 7.30pm based on wakeup & how busy the day was)

Bath used to be after dinner when Bed was around 8pm & naps were still happening.

How old are your LOs?  When my DS1 was younger, we had to move things earlier so that he would not get OT and he would go to bed earlier.  Now we do dinner and bath.  Bath around 7ish and then pj's, 3 books and bed.

Thanks for letting me know how it goes in your household!!!

We usually do dinner at 6pm - that's when DH usually arrives home.  Sometimes it is a bit rushed if I want him in bed by 7pmish.   :-\

Kate - he hates the shower.   :-\  I wish he liked it!!!  That would be nice and quick and easy!!

Guess we will keep muddling along and hope I can find a time that suits us / him cause I sure am getting sick of daily battles over bath and p.j's!!!!

Mel, my Dh gets home at 6 (most nights) also, so why we do dinner, In the early days of our change over I found "Lets have the bath before Daddy gets home then you can do X with Daddy after dinner. They used to play board games, now it is more likely to be the ancient super nintendo that they play, but it is Daddy time & made getting to bed around 7 so much easier.

We usually do bath and then dinner, reason being dinner takes forever for them (dd usually goes to be fairly early since she's started dropping her nap). The only problem I've found with this is that dd is a messy eater and sometimes she practically needs a bath again afterwords. ::)

Well he had another nap at kindy today!  So I know he won't be wanting a super early bed time.  Might try what you suggested Kate - altho we still keep getting p.j. refusal.   :-\  I guess at least if we do the bath early, plenty of time to fight over it ( ::) not really, but you know what I mean!!)

Callum's birthday today and am waiting for DH to get home so we can do presents, that will probably make Aidan hurry up and put his p.j.'s on - new toys that he can steal from his brother!!   :P

bath isnt in our routine, never really was because kaleb needs to shower 2-3 times a week given his dry skin.

Oh, it's not a routine here for that reason as well.

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY CALEB!!!  I hope you have a fantastic day!!!

Mel, have you ever let him sleep in his clothes? Every now and then ds just doesn't want to change into his PJ's so I just say fine, tonight you can sleep in your clothes. Next day he doesn't put up a fight for the PJ's. Just an idea...

We get this, too.  It was just James, but Isaac started it last night, too.  We do the same.  Just let them sleep in their day shirt or whatever they were wanting.  It's usually not an issue late.

I've had plenty of times I've just let DS2 sleep in clothes (or none as may be the case, since he likes to be naked) or even skipped the bath/shower step simply because it isn't a battle I think worth having if I know I'm going to loose my cool. I've also for the novelty given them bucket baths, where they stand in the bucket & I sponge them off... that is often a stalemate breaker around here too.
