Allergic to apples and pears?!
« on: February 10, 2009, 20:09:28 pm »
My 10 mo old has been tested and is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, and soy.  We are just feeding him Gerber baby food and Nutramigen AA formula.  He seemed to be doing ok until we introduced apple sauce.  He go very fussy and gassy and wouldn't eat much or sleep much.  We took him off apple sauce and things got better.  Then we offered him some pears and the same thing happened.  Can he be allergic to these fruits?  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Any help or advice would be appreciated!  Thanks!

It is possible to be allergic/intollerant to these fruits. My son could not have either as a baby. He is now 4 and can tolerate small amounts.

My sister can't eat most fruits (she gets anaphalactic shock eating most raw fruit / veg, but usually fine if it's cooked :-\) so, having a problem with apple / pear might not be unusual.

Thanks Kelly and 15milner.  It's good to know that there are others out there with similar problems!  Kelly, were there any other fruits your lo couldn't have?  Just want to know what else I should watch out for!  Thanks again.

To be honest James reacted badly to most fruits. Stoned fruits, berries and citrus fruits all caused great discomfort and his eczema to flare. The only fruit he seemed to be able to eat without any reaction was raisins which he started eating at around 12 months. James does have multiple allergies though and reacts to lots of different food so his diet is still very limited.

Thanks again Kelly.  We'll just have to take it slow and see how things go.  His allergist suggested it might be more of a digestion problem than an allergy.  He said that since my LO is on Nutramigen AA and hasn't really had many solids yet, his digestive system hasn't had much of a workout.  That makes some sense so I guess we'll just have to proceed with caution!

Same thing happened to my son on Neocate.  Because the formula makes it so their gut doesn't have to do any work their gut gets lazy.  Then when they have more solid foods, especially acidic foods, my son would get really bad diarrhea.  We had to introduce it really slow, like 1 tbsp at a time.

Funny, the reason I've come back onto BW today was to see about exactly this!  My DS does also seem to be reacting to apples although I am not sure I would consider it (yet) to be an allergy.

I never used to be able to eat apples - they always gave me a stomach ache.  Peeled wasn't as bad, tolerable, but still some discomfort.  Any apples processed or cooked were fine.

When I got pregnant my cravings for crunchy juicy foods led me to an apple one day and I was FINE - and ate them throughout my pregnancy.

Introduced apples to DS about a week-ish ago, at breakfast.  After three days of his morning naps being cut short and him seeming to be in some discomfort I put it together and realised that it could be the apples.  Stopped with apples, he started sleeping again!    Went back through my notes and realised it was the same on "pear days."  Interestingly, after two or three days of pears he started refusing them. I have tried a few times to give them to him again and he won't eat them.

I've just checked up on this and it seems that an allergy to apples (amongst other things) can be a sign of a pollen allergy.  There are also cross reactions.

Anyone, or anyone's LO have reactions that fit one of these:

Allergies to a certain pollen are associated with OAS reactions to certain foods. For instance, an allergy to ragweed is associated with OAS reactions to banana, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, zucchini, and cucumber. This does not mean that all sufferers of an allergy to ragweed will experience adverse effects from all or even any of these foods. Reactions may begin with one type of food and with reactions to others developing later. However, it should be noted that reaction to one or more foods in any given category does not necessarily mean a person is allergic to all foods in that group. Often well-cooked, canned, pasteurized or frozen food offenders cause little to no reaction due to denaturation of the cross-reacting proteins.[2]

        * Alder pollen: almonds, apples, celery, cherries, hazel nuts, peaches, pears, parsley
        * Birch pollen: almonds, apples, apricots, avocados, carrots, celery, cherries, chicory,[4] coriander, fennel, fig,[5] hazelnuts, kiwifruit, nectarines, parsley, parsnips, peaches, pears, peppers, plums, potatoes, prunes, soy, strawberries, wheat; Potential: walnuts
        * Grass pollen: fig,[5] melons, tomatoes, oranges
        * Mugwort pollen : carrots, celery, coriander, fennel, parsley, peppers, sunflower
        * Ragweed pollen : banana, cantaloupe, cucumber, honey dew, watermelon, zucchini; Potential: Dandelions or chamomile tea
        * Possible cross-reactions (to any of the above): berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc), citrus (oranges, lemons, etc), grapes, mango, figs, peanut, pineapple, pomegranates, watermelon

I really love this board because I can post things and find out if mine ds is the only one out there with that problem.  I've never found a problem that someone else isn't also going through or has already been through.  Thanks to everyone for your info, advice, and support!

I agree!  If it wasn't for this board I probably would never have known the possibility of my son having MSPI.  I gotten so much help and information from here.  :)
