Weaning at 12 months, some questions.
« on: February 23, 2009, 00:57:21 am »
Hi there
Well we made it to 12 months! Yipee! I have now started to wean, onto cow's milk. I have started with the lunch time milk feed to go first. My plan is to replace the evening feed next after one week, and then the morning one after another week.

So I have a few questions :

* should I be going strait to a sipper cup and bypass the bottle? lo drinks water from it very well. Lunch time I would feel ok with this, but not sure about evening milk?

* what is the trend from here in with dropping milk feeds? At 12 months should he be dropping out the lunch time one altogether? He is only having around 60-80mls.

* At what age would I expect to drop out the morning feed, and then what age the night time one? i think i remember reading in one of Tracey's books that by 18 months they should be weaned of milk altogther?

Thanks for your help, as you can tell I am a first timer!!  :P

HI

Firstly WELL DONE!!

I am also in the process of weaning my one year old and feel very pleased to have made it to a year.  I had already dropped the 11am feed for a snack as i had a nanny start a couple of months ago who was shocked she was still having milk at this time!  I stopped giving her milk with meals a long time ago as as long as your little one is getting a good balanced diet they shouldn't need the milk.  I've managed to drop the morning and 3pm feed and swap it for a cup so just have the night time to go.  I've gone straight for giving her cup as she has never had bottle so didn't like the idea of then having to wean her from that. Like you said though i've no idea how to approach the night time one as I just don't think she will take a cup then.

With my DD she wouldn't sit still for either feed so i just give her the cup and let her drink it in her own time.  It took her a few feeds to get used to the taste of milk (we are giving her goats) but she is fine with it now.  Also I warm it for 20 secs in the microwave first and then stir it to get rid of hot spots, just so its not cold from the fridge.  Hope this is some help!  I'm sort of experimenting myself

I would also appreciate any ideas anyone has for night time feed!

The only one I can answer straight away is teh sippy one.  If he takes a sippy well, then by all means go for that.  No need to wean you & a bottle.  My ds2 still takes evening cow's milk from a sippy as part of his wind-down.

I'm sorry I don't understand this bit.  By "milk feed" do you mean breast milk or cow's milk?  You mention being weaned of milk by 18 mo, but that doesn't necessarily hold for either breast or cow.  The World Health Organization recommends bf to 24 mo (not as sole source of nutrition, obviously), & several pediatric societies in the various countries say bf to 12 mo + as long as it "works" for both mom & baby.  So you wouldn't *have* to be weaned at 18 mo unless that's what works for you & ds.  (These recs are relatively new & were not available to Tracy when she was writing.  She did try to follow the research, so we believe she probably would've updated her recs based on research were she still with us to do so.)

If you mean cow's milk instead, you might find more info on the eating for toddlers board:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=53.0

I hope something in all that helps you!  :)

Hi thanks for both your answers!

As I am talking about weaning from the breast, I refer to milk feed as cows milk from a cup or bottle.

I guess now I can look at dropping out the lunch time milk. I guess I am looking for an idea of what to expect in the coming months, by roughly what age will the morning milk feed go? Already? And from the last bit of info, does that mean I can expect to continue with a milk feed at night until he is 2?

Thanks for all your help!
Alison :)

If you are not beast feeding and you baby has a healthy varied diet then after they are one they don't actually need milk in their diet at all.  The World Health Organisation recommends breast feeding for a minimum of two years for the health benifits of breast milk.  Here the government recommend breast feeding for a minimum of 6 months so how and when you decided to stop is up to you.

I would say you can definitely droop then lunch time milk and swap the mid morning feed (ours is around 11ish) for snack like a piece of fruit.  Are these feeds breast or cows milk at the moment?  Then what breast feeds are you left with?  I think the night feed is an individual choice as for most babies once they have reached one it is the comfort and routine of a night feed which they need, not the actual food.  I am actually thinking about dropping the milk at night completely if she doesn't take to the cup when I give it a go.

I will let you know how it goes am going to attempt it in the next couple of days!

hi nododo
thanks for your reply!

Right at this moment we have the lunch time cow's milk which I think i will drop on your recommendation. He doesn't take that much anyway, only 60-80mls. Apart from that we have a morning breast feed, and a bed time breast feed. My plan is to swap bed time milk to cow's milk this Friday and the morning feed to cow's milk the Friday after. I received this advise from my local child and youth health Nurse. So i'll go with it.

I had no idea that they don't really need milk now, isn't it funny that you just do what other people do and think that it is right. Also on that, I never considered going strait to a sipper cup for the milk until a nurse asked me why I was going to bottle. it is just what you see other people do so you think that is what to do!!

Thanks again,

Alison  :)

Hi girls,

Just jumping in and marking for later. AlsOne - hope you don't mind.
DD will be 1 yo next week and she's still BF (lunch time bottle is formula, though).

XOXO
