Cutting out night feeds
« on: February 23, 2009, 17:01:21 pm »
My lo is nearly 12 weeks old. She has a DF at about 11pm and sometimes will then sleep through to 6 or even has been known to sleep til 7am. When she has slept til that kind of time she has quite often woken at 4 or 5am but not cried and has sent herself back off to sleep. For the past 3 or 4 nights though she has woken at 4 or even 3am. She hasn't cried, she just chats and grunts and sucks her thumb. She hasn't been going back to sleep though so I've given her a bottle. After the bottle she is still awake for 30mins to an hour again just chatting away to herself quite happily. I'm wondering though if I am feeding her unnecessarily. Because she is lying there awake I feel cruel if I leave her and don't feed her, just in case she is hungry. On the other hand though I know she can go through the night without it as she has done before. Through the day she is fed every 4 hours and doesn't tend to cry for food so I think she gets enough during the day.
At what age did everyone else give up night feeds?

Your lo sounds like she is doing FANTASTIC!!!!  She could be going through a growth spurt which is causing the wakings, however, if she is NOT crying....I would probably leave her to fall back to sleep.

If she is crying, chances are she is hungry and should be fed.  Growth spurts last just a few days.

If you'd like, post your current routine and it might help us better determine if it is a growth spurt or habitual waking!

Hi There,

Not too sure but i've heard that LO's can have 'Crib Parties' in the early hours of the morning. My LO sometimes does exactly the same (he's 11 weeks) and i too am unsure what to do. I figure if he was hungry he would cry. I think these 'parties' can be due to too much sleep during the day but really unsure and interested in what others have to say.

I have been feeding when he does this but not sure if i should as I too know he can go through to 6/7am. ( what lucky Mummies we are!!  ;D)

Thank you both for your advice. The last couple of nights when she has woken I have just left her to go back to sleep and she has slept til 6/6.30am so I think it was just habit. I just hope she eventually stops as it's making her more tired in the day but never mind you can't have everything can you! x
