Reacting to Rice cereal??
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:35:31 am »
Hi,

Spencer has been on solids since 5 months (just a teaspoon a day until 6 months - she was very interested in our food!) Started on pears, prunes, bananas, sweet potato....then tried oatmeal which made her eczema flare up horribly, so stopped that. I had introduced rice cereal in the last couple of weeks and it seems like her arms and hands get red and she gets red spots on her chest after eating it. Now, I've also noticed that the dishsoap that wash getting on her facecloth does irritate her skin, but I eliminated it and she still is getting red after the rice. Any ideas? and what the heck else can I give her as a substitute? (she loves it mixed with bananas/prunes and it doesn't constipate her or anything)

TIA
Heidi

You could acquire some millet and make your own cereal from scratch.  I've read that it is one of the least allergenic grains.  I have also read (from various and possibley slightly kooky sources ;)), that babies lack the enzymes to properly digest grains until sometime between 9 months and 2 years (depending on which kooky source you're reading ;), so if your LO has a sensitive system, it might be worth delaying grains for a while yet.

I'm limiting my DD's grain intake to just millet for the time being.

Hayden had a reaction to rice (profuse vomiting, blood and mucus in diaper), so different to what Spencer has had... and with her reflux all of the cereals made her reflux worse except for wheat.  I tried each one until I found what worked the best, but as long as she's getting iron from somewhere (ie a meat source), they don't actually need cereal.  Although "they" say it's unlikely for a LO to be allergic to rice. :-\  Tbh, it doesn't have enough nutritive value to be worth causing this type of reaction regardless, so I'd try different types or even meat, or go more towards the BLW route.

HTH! :)

Thanks for the replies...I experimented and gave her 1 spoonful of oatmeal yesterday and she got a tummy ache and wouldn't finish her sippy cup, was really crusty and then had horrid green poo today....so I'm going to skip the cereals for a bit altogether. I am changing her over to a Step 2 formula with more iron, and we have tried out chicken and beef too.  Really I was just using it to thicken up her babyfood as she likes it a little thicker, so I think BLW may be the way to go for her, she already takes the spoon and feeds herself!

Poor thing!  BLW sounds like a wise choice!  :)

I know this might be obvious but is there anything else in the cereal you are trying?  I had to look around for a while to find a cereal that was just plain with no extra additives such as soy.  Rice cereal is not just rice around here.

Kathy - My sister suggested the same thing, but I was using an organic rice cereal with no additives, but we also wondered if it could be something that was maybe manufactured in the same place. I went to a health food store to see if they had anything else and they suggested quinoa, so we are trying that and when I get a chance to go shoppping (our local store is pretty bare bones) I'm going to try BLW.

thanks

Yup, made some this am, I was eating it too...I may need to buy it in bulk if it works for her! So far so good, no reactions and she's napping away right now!

That's awesome that you were able to find an alternative!

Yes, I was glad...I needed something to give a little texture to her purees, she is so over the whole babyfood thing, going shopping on the weekend so I can lauch into BLW, but she really loves her cereal for breakfast, so this works!

Glad that the quinoa is working for her. I just wanted to say that, although it is rather rare, it is possible to be allergic to rice. My dd was when she was young (she's 6 1/2 now.) Keep an eye on your dd for additional reactions. I was trying to remember what I gave her as a substitute to thicken her fruit purees and I think it was cream of wheat. I mixed it with breastmilk but formula would work as well. I hope she continues to be well and have good naps.
