Red splotches after dairy...
« on: February 27, 2009, 04:33:09 am »
Hi, my 10 mo old little girl gets red splotches on her face (around her mouth) when I give her yogurt or cow's milk.  Our family doctor said this is not a dairy allergy but to not give her yogurt/cows milk until 12 months.  I was just wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing...if it's not an allergy then what is it?  Thanks :)

It could be an Intolerance, but I'm not sure why he'd dismiss it as not an allergy when she's getting red blotches on her face.  Hopefully she'll grow out of it by the time she's 12 months, even though that is only a couple of months away.

I was going to say the same as PP if the splotches become inflamed I would go and see your doctor and explain to them that this has been happening for quiet a while and see what they have to say. But like PP said it can happen  un children under 12 months and hopefully it will stop when she turns a year

My dd had something similar and our dr. told us that it was more of a skin sensitivity issue, which made sense because the splotches were usually where the food/milk was on her face (around her mouth, chin, etc)!  I limited her dairy at first, just in case, but it never turned into anything more serious.  DD does have more sensitive skin, prone to dryness, etc.. so it's not terrible surprising.

Thanks!  It is just redness around her mouth, never anywhere else...I'll offer her some yogurt to see if it happens again, and if it does I'll wait until she's 12 months.

Oh I see.  I was thinking her cheeks were getting splotches.  That makes sense.  Hopefully that is all it is.  :)

Have you tried the yogurt again? I am just interested to see if it happened again. It could just be that your lo has sensitive skin but I would not completely rule out a dairy allergy just yet.

I gave her yogurt twice today, at lunch and dinner and she didn't get the splotches either time...maybe she outgrew it?  She did spit up a little afterwards though...

Our 16 month old has the same issue.  We noticed it around 9-10 months.  Whenever he came in contact with anything with dairy in it, he would get red welts on his face.  Our pedi didn't think it was a dairy allergy but went ahead and ordered a RASP blood test to check for allergies.  He was, in fact, highly allergic to dairy.  We switched him to soy yogurt and no welts!  We're still having a hard time getting him on soy milk (I'm still breastfeeding).  Any suggestions???

Have you tried rice milk or almond milk?  I know a lot of mom's here, including me, have put their lo on rice milk.  I'm not sure if it tastes better than soy, but worth a shot?
