Hello,

I have a 5 week old who is breastfeeding. We are dealing with a bit of reflux and quite a bit of spitting up. She is gaining weight, almost 11lbs!, and has normal and frequent diapers.

However, when she breastfeeds and sometimes at other times, she makes a very loud inhale noise - almost like an asthmatic inhale with a high-pitched "squeak-wheeze." (You can make the sound if you inhale deeply into the back of your throat).

I am very concerned about this and have tried every position for breastfeeding and sleeping possible.

Has anyone ever had something similar?

Marie Laure

Hi and welcome! :)

I have actually never heard quite that before - have you mentioned it to your ped?

I have mentioned it and they said it was Lucy trying to keep up while breastfeeding as my milk comes in quite quickly. That would make sense though I occasionally hear it while she is sleeping. She will do one inhale in her sleep every once in a while, almost like her breath caught her off guard.
Any other thoughts or ideas as to where to research this some more?

Well this talks about a clicking sound: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/clicking-when-nursing.html which can definitely happen with a forceful letdown.  There are some suggestions on dealing with it:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html and http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=117061.0

I would imagine that as she's sleeping, her reflux might be bringing the acid up in her throat, causing her to make some noises as she swallows it back down or as it irritates her throat. Babies with reflux often cough a lot too.  Is her crib inclined?  And are you following EASY with her?  There are some great suggestions on the reflux board too:
http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=13.0  Is she on medication for the reflux?

HTH a bit!

Hello,

Yes, we have everything inclined and are following a 3 hour EASY. A friend gave us the BW and we have followed it to the letter - it is fantastic and Lucy adores the routine, even at 5 weeks. I have sent copies to a few friends so far! Lucy is a Textbook/Spirited baby and this has helped us understand her better.
She does cough a lot when she BF and this is from the fast let-down. We burp her frequently during feeds to help  as well.
I will go back to the reflux board and do more reading!
Thank you - What is HTH?

I think i know what you mean. My son does something similar. It's a hard noise to describe for the benefit of others isn't it?... It's from their throat. Just before they swallow, as they breath in. Not as high pitched as a squeak?

I presumed it was a "struggling to cope with a fast let down" noise. I'll be watching to see if anyone has any other ideas.

Good luck!

Hello,

It is hard to describe!
I happened to have dinner with a friend & his parents last night and his father has been a pediatrician for 31 years. He knew I was concerned so we brought Lucy and he heard the noise. She does it every once in a while in her sleep. He said it was very normal and just a gasp for air. I was concerned that it could be sleep apnea and he said it was not.
Some babies are just louder than others he said and to not be concerned. If it was followed by shortness of breath, it would be a different story.
During the nursing, it is due to a fast letdown and the LOs trying to catch their breath..

Frankly, this all made me feel much better and thank you for replying as I was feeling a bit alone with this one!

No problem!

If it is the same noise as my DS then i would say it is fine. In fact i think it is just cos he is rushing - he is such a greedy baby :)

They do like to give us something to think about don'T they?

Hi! I know this is an oldish thread now but I've only just joined. My son is 9 weeks and he has made that sound - almost a creaking? - for ages now; only seems to be while feeding when he is taking a lot in so I assumed it is ok! Glad to find out he's not the only one! Thanks! :)

My lo used to squeak, we never found out the reason for it. She doesn't do it anymore if that helps!
