What to do with multiple habitual NW?
« on: March 11, 2009, 05:52:43 am »
My 6month old Ds wakes up at 930pm, 145am, 315am, 415am, 530 or 6am

His EASY schedule:

E         7am        Feed 6oz.
A
S         9am        Nap (1.5-2hrs)
E         1130am   Feed 6oz.
A
S         1pm        Nap (1.5-2hrs)
A         3-30pm   Bath (given early so his jealous 21month old brother won't give me hard time)
E         4pm        Feed 6oz.
S         5pm        Catnap (1hr - Usually have to wake him up from this nap)
A
E         730pm     Feed 4oz.
S         745-8pm  Bedtime
E         11pm       Dreamfeed

How do i do PU/PD when seems to get even more agitated when i pick him up? Right now I am just sticking a dummy in his mouth, re-swaddle and then shush/pat without picking him up. He settles down very quickly, except for the 3-5am waking. He's very upset, but calms down right away if i put him on the changing table and change his diaper. Usually after the diaper change he coos for a bit and falls back asleep (swaddled, no dummy) within 30min.

He sleeps in bed with me because he wakes up so much, so i dont want to put him into my toddler's room just yet, although his crib is already there and he sleeps in his brother's room for all his daytime naps. it took me 1year to get my 1st DS to STTN, so i'm protecting it with my life!

I've started removing the dummy before he falls alseep, although his eyes are closed and he's totally fine falling asleep. I use it for his naps sometimes if he's bit OT because we have to go out to run errands or whatnot. Only his first nap is in the stroller and when i get home, i just stroll him straight into my son's room and leave him in there till he wakes up. Which can be anywhere from 45min-2hrs.

hi

I have the same problem with my LO but since friday seems to go much better as I am following some suggestions
Is ur LO teething ?
Could he be hungry ?
do you do a slow down routine?
From what I see he has eventually too long A time?
I was told to keep him on 2.50 A time only if he has a good nap, if the nap s short ( 45 or less) then reduce the nap time

does this make sense?
Also have u noticed if he wakes up because his arms move too much? My LO does!!!

good luck
Paola

YES!!! whenever my lo is in the light sleep cycle, he starts scratching his head, ears and rubbing his eyes fiercely. 9 out of 10 times he wakes himself up from this scratching. he still has to wear mittens at 6months or else he wakes up with really bad scratches all over his head and bloody fingernails.

He always gets out of the swaddle now so i end up re-swaddling all through the night. Luckily 4 out of the 5 night wakings i can just re-swaddle and shush/pat him to sleep. I don't need to pick him up as that usually agitates him even more.

I tried dropping the DF to see if that was disrupting his sleep, but then he would feed a full bottle at 4 or 5am. So i still DF because i didn't want the 4/5am feeding to become a habit.

how do you teach self-soothing to a baby who still can't control his arms and legs? i've become his prop the "re-swaddler". If only he would suck his fingers?

How long should i let him cry before intervening?

Yeah, i've read up on those 2 links. although his naps aren't always 2hrs each, i make sure he doesn't get more than 5hrs total during the day. i've also increased his a time to 2.5-3hrs

I've narrowed it down to the dummy. Which i've stopped using for his naps and he goes down quite easily sometimes.

How does PU/PD work if he always starts his mantra cry when i've picked him up and starts crying when i put him down? Usually i only have to PU/PD 3-5 times and he goes to sleep. I have introduced a lovie (a long round pillow). So now he goes to sleep swaddled (both hands) and the moment i place the pilllow by his head he will close his eyes, turn his face into it and start to fall asleep.

But it's not much use at night since he's swaddled and can't get to it himself. i'll just keep trying PU/PD at night since W2S is impossible because wakes up so many times a night.
