Early Wakes in 11.5 mo old
« on: March 16, 2009, 19:12:44 pm »
DD is 11.5 mo and has been waking early (5:30-6) vs previous 7-7:30.  She wakes crying and sometimes gets realy upset.  I know she's still tired, but no success at getting her back to sleep.  She gets so would p with PU/PD in that before she gives up, it's time to wake anyway.  I've had success getting her to settle with p/S, but never goes back to sleep, at least not for more that a few mins.

Occas she wakes earlier, (say 4"30) & I can usually get her back to sleep eventually, but with the 5-6 wakes, we just run out of time.

Any other ideas on how to break this ew habit?
Sarah

Well, we're just moving to 1 nap, so the EASY is currentlty hard to pinpoint, but it looks something like this:

wake (hopefully not before 7!) 5-6
7 up & bf
6 breakfast
10:30 or so, short (15 min ish) catnap
11 bf
12 lunch
1/1:30 nap (depending on cues)--about 2 hrs
3:30 snack
5:30 supper
6:30 bf
bath, books, bed 7/7:30 depending on nap and cues

I thought at first she might be OT thus ew, but I've been paying close attn to her cues, and if I put her to bed before cues, she does not sleep, plays and talks till she gets bored and then cries, and repeat, repeat, etc till she's OT, so I make sure to get her to bed right when she's comfortably tired.

The AM catnap we've been cutting back (was 40, then 30, 20, now 15 ish) as she's started skipping PM naps, she's good at letting us know when she needs less.  She cannot survive without it though, espec with ew.

Thanks!
Sarah

I am thinking she might be OT at bedtime.  4hrs+ before bed seems like a lot for that age.  Maybe try to do an earlier bedtime?  Or do you think she wouldn't sleep earlier than 7.30?

Something that has worked for us and many more with EW is to push the 1st nap backwards.  But first I would try the early bedtime.

okay. So what are you thinking, maybe 3:30 A time?  I have been putting her to bed between 7 and 7:30, when I've put her to bed earlier she's not gone down well...plays till she gets bored then cries and so on.  But, we started this 1 nap transition when the time changed a week or two ago, so maybe it was just too early, but now she's basically adjusted she might take the earlier to bed a bit easier.  tonight I did 6:50 (she napped till 3:20), so that's A time =3:30.  so far so good, she's either asleep or playing really quiet! ;D

Would you expect her to start sleeping later in the morning right away when she's not going to bed OT? or will it take a while to break the habit?

Thanks again!
Sarah

You need to experiment a bit with bedtime to find the right one for your lo.  How did it go yesterday?

I wouldn't be able to tell.  We'll have to tackle that one when it happens  ;)

not well, she woke even earlier, seemed to settle for 20 min but was up since 5.  I see though a tooth just came through, so maybe that was part of her problem last night.  ???
