Has dd now developed temporary MI after illness??
« on: March 14, 2009, 12:12:17 pm »
Dd had stomach flu for about 5 days. She want excessively ill. My ds had it too and he vomited all day when he had it, had cramps, diarrhoea, she only vomited once when it started, and had about 2 days of very watery stools. She only vomited when she had her formula and/or yoghurt.

The first few days she didnt want to drink anything, and eventually she is now drinking juice and eating her cereal which i mix with water. She was very sleepy and worn out, slept all day, but i can see she is better and stayed awake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours today before wanting to sleep. I gave her 120ml with only 1 scoop of formula to see if i give her a weak bottle if she'll keep it down, but after 2 min it came back out. Her stools now are not as watery as it was (looked like wee) but still runny enough to be absorbed by the diaper.

I have read up on this and they say that temporary milk intolerance will last for about 4 weeks. But they say it does not cause vomiting?? So why would she be bringing her milk back up? I have also ordered lf formula to start that after a few days to see if she keeps that down, but I am confused by the above. Also, if anyone has had to use lf coz of similar case, did you start out with a more diluted feed, and then built it up, or just kept it normal? Anyone had this happen to them??

Is she still sick from the flu?  If she is I'd assume that is why she cannot keep down the formula.  I never diluted feeds either, so I am unsure about that.  Hopefully she'll feel better soon. :)

No, the last time she vomited was 2 days ago and she was eating then which made me think she's better as she wouldnt eat anything before that. I havent tried her normal formula yet, but she's ok on the lactose free and I am making her proper feeds, not diluted anymore. I started out diluted but after 1 day went on full and she's been ok.

i'd sya give her  abreak of a week or so from milk and then slowly start back with an easier form to digest suhc as yoghurt.

DS had exactly the same but was back to atking milk in about 10 days.

how old is she?
9 and 6, oh boy!

She's 10mths old. So far so good. She can keep things down with dairy in it. I'll just give her body a break for a week or so. Just glad the virus is now gone and I have my smiley baby back! Thanx Melanie.

Hi there

I took my son to the hospital at one point when he was about 3 months old because he had a D&V bug that was really bad. One of the things we were told by the paediatrician was that when infants get a tummy bug, it does lower their levels enzymes and cause their body to lose the ability to break down the lactose in milk, and it can continue for three to four weeks.  This isn't a temporary "milk intolerance" as milk intolerance is an inability to digest the milk proteins, which is very different from lactose intolerance, which is the inability to break down the milk sugar.  So yes, it is normal, and very common.

My own personal thought would be to NOT switch to a lactose free formula, for a couple of reasons -- first, a baby's digestive system is very sensitive to change and a change in formula can be hard on their system. It also usually causes changes in bowel movements for a couple of days, and so you wouldn't know if that was the change in formula, any further illness, a reaction to the formula, etc.  Secondly, because your LO isn't lactose intolerant, her body is just using the enzymes elsewhere to do different jobs while it's healing from being ill, and thus having a bit of trouble with the lactose at the moment, which is different than being lactose intolerant. Keeping her on her regular milk will help her build back her strength and her body regain the ability to break down the lactose.  It may sort of seem like her bug is lingering a bit, but that helps her build the strength up and to fight it should it come again.

HTH?
