Is this a reaction?
« on: March 21, 2009, 20:45:38 pm »
Whenever DD eats Velveeta mac & cheese she gets red marks around her mouth. She's had it a few times. The first time I thought she had just scratched herself a bit because her nails needed trimming and she was really piling the food in. But then the second and third time it happened again, although to a lesser extent. Last night she had it again for dinner and her chin/around her mouth turned red again. She LOVES the stuff and there's no other issues after she eats it besides the redness. I have no idea what could be in it though that would cause a reaction. She's had plenty of cheese/dairy before (she even drinks plain milk) and she's had plain noodles with no side effects? She's gone through all the baby cereals just fine, so I don't think it's a grain issue? I would hate to stop feeding it to her because she loves it so much, but could there be a problem with it?

Look closely at the ingredients and you'll likely find a whole host of things (preservatives, etc) that you would be unlikely to find in plain milk and cheese or in a basic noodle.  It may be that she's reacting to one of those things.  I tend to be conservative and figure if the body's reacting, even if it's not a very bothersome reaction, it's better to avoid the offending food--but that's just me. :)

A rash around the mouth is often a sign of food intolerance. The cheese in the packaged mac and cheese is likely to be highly processed - cheese powder, powdered milk etc so the proteins are different to straight milk/cheese. That might cause a reaction.  If you make homemade mac and cheese does she have a reaction?

I've never given her homemade mac and cheese. I'll have to give that a try. She had some cheesy noodles and veggies tonight for dinner and had no problem. This was a frozen veggie type thing with broccoli and carrots but it also had a cheese sauce and spiral noodles in it, so basically like mac and cheese. I'll have to look at the box to see exactly what is in the Velveeta (I'm sure it's highly processed). I just wonder what could be causing the reaction because it's not like I've been super careful with what she's eaten and she hasn't had any problems with anything else.

It's very tough sometimes to find out just what it could be! Sometimes it can be one of the flavours added in -  not sure what the regulations are where you live, but here in Australia manufacturers can just add "flavour" to the label! Maybe she can tolerate fresh/frozen dairy but not powdered?

It's hard to say with processed foods.  Like the PP said, you don't really know what is in the "natural flavours", sometimes that is a hidden name for MSG.  I also looked at the ingredients and they list Oleoresin Paprika, which is an oil from Paprika used to colour food.  I'm not sure if there is any "hotness" to it, or even minor enough for a baby to react to.  If she gets the red cheeks every time I'd assume it is something in the Velveeta.  The cheese sauce they use in the vegetable mix you made could  have completely different ingredients.  I'd definitely compare the two.

If she is fine with wheat, dairy, soy, then I would assume it is the additives that she is reacting to, and just avoid that food for awhile.  Hope this helps :)
