3 wk old question about gas
« on: March 22, 2009, 22:12:59 pm »
My almost 3 wk old is seeming to have some gas issues.  We have him on lactose free fromula as we suspected he had a sensativity.  My dd did also.  He seems to be quite gassy at night and there is times I think that he has pood but his gas is just very smelly.  Is this normal for a formula fed baby to be so smelly?  He has been very unsettled the last 2 days and wondering if it is the formula.  Wondering if I need to switch to nutragen formula instead.

Formula can do wonderful things to a baby's digestion - I recall when my son used to "let one rip" he could've cleared the room with the noxious fumes!

It could be just that his system is not up to par yet, being so young and all, or it could be something more.  Was your dd lactose intolerant or milk/soy protein intolerant?  If your son is mspi the lactose free formula still has milk proteins and therefore would still bug him.

How long as he been on this formula?  Can you tell me the name of the formula?  What do you mean by "unsettled" for the last 2 days, could you give examples?  How's his bowel movements?  Anything else you can think of?  In the meantime, I offer hugs and support! :)

my dd is lactose intolerant and still is at almost 4.  We have ds on similac sensitive for lactose sensitivity.  He is better but did have issues with gas in the middle of the night.  I have been doing tummy massage to get things moving and he always seems to be better after a bm.  Not sure if we just aren't getting the burps out good enough and causing issues at the other end or if it is the formula.  He seems okay most of the time during the day and I try to keep him on his routine to avoid him overeating and getting too much gas.  he usually goes 4hrs but if need be will feed him at 3.

Hugs to you xxx I was wondering if he has any other symptoms, diahhreah (sp), loose, explosive or watery?  Any mucus in the poo? Blood?

He is at the prime age for colic and wind, have you tried any wind remedies to see if they work? Also warm baths, massage of the tummy gently which you are already doing, and bicycling the legs can all help.  I used gripe water and infacol which is available under different names in different places, the active ingredient is smithecone.  As I said, I would expect colic unless you are seeing any other symptoms as detailed in the first paragraph.

With an LI intolerant DD it always pays to be careful, so trust your instinct and visit your doctor if you are concerned xxx

Id also suggest trying some probiotics. They do make some that can be mixed with a bottle of milk/formula for infants. Look in a health food store, usually in a refrigerated section.

Natalie could clear the room with her farts from the day she was born. I took a gelcap of probiotics, put some on my nipple, and by the next day no more room-clearing farts! :-)

Probiotics put "good" bacteria into the gut to help with digestion, and if they're missing or unbalanced for any reason (I suspect the A/B IV drip while I was laboring since I was GBS+), it can affect the "gut" flora balance.

he seems to be much better the last couple of days.  He is passing gas with ease in his sleep so maybe his body was still adjusting to the formula.  I may have to try the probiotics.  Thanks.
