Almost 3 and changing sleep pattern.....anyone still around?
« on: March 25, 2009, 00:55:34 am »
Hello All!  It's been a while.  My ds will be 3 at the end of May.  He has had the same schedule for ages:
awake: 6:15-6:30, nap 1-3, lights out at 7:30 and asleep b/w 7:45-8pm.  But over the past couple of weeks he has taken an hour to get to sleep at night, so lights out at 7:30 but doesn't fall asleep until 8:30!  As a result wake up is 7:00am.  I like to later wake up (who wouldn't!) but I do not like that he takes so long to fall asleep.  There are times when he takes a few minutes long to fall asleep at nap time now too ( I am assuming because he is awake 30 min later in the am now).   I would like to get him to sleep faster at night.  Should I be shortening his nap now?  If so, at what end....push it later or wake up earlier?   Iknow he is getting to the age where I have to shorten that nap to eventually drop it....is it starting??????????????????? :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

I would shorten the nap, for a 7.30pm bedtime i would have your LO up by 2pm from the nap.

Hi,

I agree with pp, Masyn is 2.5 and is up at 7:00am, naps from 1-2 pm (usually!) and in bed at 7:00pm (asleep in about 30 min or so) I find that if I let her sleep any later than 2:00 she takes forever to fall asleep.

i was going to say the same, shorten the nap for the same bedtime otherwise you will just have to deal with a later bedtime from now on till he drops the nap all together to get back to a early bedtime.

Thanks all!

so i cut the nap to 90 minutes (1-2:30) and it went well for a while.  But over the past 3 days ds is taking longer to fall asleep again and is now waking early.  should i shorten to 2:15pm and for how long before down to 1 hr?  This is a hard one for mummy to let go!!!!!!!!!!!

if i put him down earlier what time would i wake him?  I haven't had much luck in the past with earlier nap time but can try again (maybe it will be different with a shorter nap?)

Nope, earlier nap didn't fly!  He usually takes 5-10min to fall asleep but trying 30 min earlier and it took 20+min.
I am guessing i will have to think about shortening it from the end?!

We had to shorten Masyn's from the end, now we are down to 30-45 min power naps.

We've been tweaking her naps since January...trying different naptimes and lengths, went through a couple of weeks of no naps (still had a "rest" time) and then when she finally started sleeping again I cut it down to 45 min max unless she is going to have a late bedtime. I really think this is the beginning of the end of her naps, but I want to maintain a quiet rest time, so I still will keep putting her in room every afternoon for that, whether she sleeps or not is up to her at this point.
