13 week old: 2 NW to feed
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:31:45 am »
Hi there,

DD just turned 13 weeks.  She is on a 4-hour EASY, with about 2hr activity time in each cycle.  I feed her at 7am, 11am, 3pm and then again at 7pm.  She’s a happy baby and I out her down in her crib awake and typically goes to sleep on her own.  The only problem now is that she consistently gets up twice per night to feed: somewhere between midnight and 1am, and then again between 4-5am.

FYI, our EASY routine generally looks like this:
7:00 wake and feed
9:00 sleep
11:00 wake and feed
1:00 sleep
2:30 wake
3:00 feed
5:00 sleep
5:45 wake, bath, massage
7:00 feed and then sleep around 7:30/7:45

Any ideas on how to cut the night feeds?  Feeds generally take 20 min during the day (including burps), and about 15 min at nighttime. How do I tackle this?  She won’t take the pacifier, never has.  Do I try to cut the first or the second nighttime feed first?  I tend to go to bed around 9:30pm myself, so a DF around 11pm is not my cup of tea, besides, unless she stirs and gets up on her own, she won’t drink much and end up getting up a few hours later  ::)

The other issue is that when the second feed is close to 5am, then she won’t drink as much at 7am… or she’ll spit up a lot.  I have been trying to reduce the amount [in minutes] to ensure she gets a good feed in the am, but it doesn’t always work.  Sometimes, if I decrease the number of minutes and then put her down in her crib, she’ll fuss and eventually cry until I feed her again.

Any ideas?  Is it too early for mommy want to sleep through the night? :)

Thanks!
Sherry

It's very, very normal for two night feeds at this age, especially without a dreamfeed. Honestly, at this age, as long as it is a good time since her last feed, I would give her her milk when she wakes at night. I know it feels like forever, but this stage really will pass. (((hugs)))

Oh dear... I was afraid you'd say that :)

Any ideas on how to handle the cases where the NW is close to the actual morning wake time [let's say she gets up at 5:30-6am to feed instead of 7am for her usual wake...]?  Do I give her a full feed?  Do I try to keep her up until 7am, and then feed her?

You could introduce a dream feed before you go to bed so hopefully you'll only get up once?

As for the second feed it's up to you you could feed and just 'top up' at 7am or give a small feed so she is hungry at 7am. My opinion ......

Agree with Sarah. I'd do a 'normal' night feed and then just top up at 7 or 7.30 to start the day.

You'll probably find this 5 am feed gradually turns into the 7am feed anyway. Fingers crossed for you.
