Looking for good fruit + veg combinations
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:32:10 am »
So, when we started solids, DS didn't really like any fruits.  Only veg: sweet potato, green beans, peas, avocado, etc.  No worries from me, as it's always harder to get LOs to eat their veggies than it is their fruits!

But, over the past two weeks he has developed a love for fruit and now refuses to eat almost anything vegetable, which is driving me mad!  I know it's a phase, but I don't want him eating a zillion servings of fruit all day as his only food! That, and I get fed up with making food (veggies) that he doesn't eat!

I am having luck with mixing, but am looking for other flavours that mix well together.  Any suggestions?

Right now we do:

* butternut squash with pear (first bite pear, then a bit of squash, a bit more, etc etc until the end of the meal he's eating 90% squash with a touch of pear added)
* cauliflower and zucchini (courgette) mixed with apple (used to do 1oz apple with 1/2 oz of each of the other two, am now up to equal parts, so again some success)
* sweet potato with pea and leek mixed with a spoonful of orange juice (it's actually quite tasty!) Lessening the OJ each time.

Does anyone have any other good suggestions of what fruits I can add to different veg to sweeten it up a bit, that is a nice taste that works well?

Great Topic!

I'm having the same dilemma (even DS just started solids a few weeks ago). Seems like he likes fruits more than veggies (except for sweet potatoes-he loves those). Whenever I offer veggies such as avocados or sweet peas he has the most disgusted look on his face! -Probably because its not SWEET. LOL. Its actually pretty hilarious to watch.  ;D
I started mixing peas and sweet potatoes and even though he still has that funny look on his face, he still eats it. I'll have to try the suggestions you listed below...

What do you think I can mix with avocados to make the taste less intense for him? I really want him to start eating avocados since its rich in good fats and nutrients.

Spencer loves any veggie with a bit of pear mixed in, and with the avocados I use some formula to mash it with - she made a few faces at first, but now it's her new favourite meal!

Those all sound like tasty combinations. I will have to try that next and see how he likes it. Never thought of mixing bananas or papaya and avocado but it sounds yummy. I'll try it at our next meal. :) I'm looking forward to seeing the faces I'll get... LOL

Yeah, I never thought of banana with avocado either...Spencer loves mango too, but her insides don't. I love the taste of pear and sweet potato...not that the sweet potato needs to be more sweet, but one day I accidentally mixed it and it was really tasty.

Sweet potato and apple is one that goes down well. You could put chicken in with it too if you eat meat.

Super quick cos it's WAYYYY past bedtime for moi!!

Pear and parsnip was a winner here.
Baked sweet potato with a little freshly squeezed orange juice mixed in. And butter.
In fact a bit of fresh orange also worked to get fish into him initially too.
I make up a lamb casserole with sweetpotato and apple. The apple really helped initially.

Also found that melted cheese worked wonders for us here. And when he's really struggled to eat, I compromise a little and put a little of his fruit (desert) on the spoon, with his veggies (1:3).

One we just did in class had:  rutabega (or turnip), parsnip, apple, carrot & raisins.  The nutrionist calls it the immune booster, supposedly good for the immune system.  It's really yummy, and DS loves it too!  :)

We love banana and avocado, pretty sure DS would eat it for everymeal if I let him.

We also do carrot and apple/pear which is also a firm favourite!
