12 hour days?????
« on: March 25, 2009, 15:55:35 pm »
hi there i have read a few posts on here, and know that a baby should aim for 12 hour days and 12 hour nights.
my DS is nearly 9 months, and at the moment i feel like im losing my control and EASY pattern and im falling away from everything!! he only sleeps 11 hours rough;y i know i cant complain, he wakes sometimes in the night! but if he wakes at 6 i know i should put him down at 6, at the moment im trying to put him down at 7, but this didnt work he still woke at 6am! so this morning he woke at 6 i'll put him down at 6 but then this will result in a 5am waking!!! might be a 4am waking the following morning!
any clever ideas on how to get him back on track, with sleeping 12 hours at waking at 7ish??
he has 2x1.5 hour naps are these too long, but he can only handle 2.5 -3 hours A time?
im reaaly sorry if i am going on, need a bit of help as i feel now that im losing and just things are happening when he wants them to.  our routine looks like this....

E 6.30  breakfast at 8.30
A
S 9.00 1.5-2 hour nap time
E 11/11.30  lunch and pudding  milk at 1 ish
A
S 1.30  1.5 hour nap
E 4.00 dinner and yoghurt  milk 6.30
A
S 7.00

all help is welcome

Not all babies want to sleep for 12 hrs at night. As you say 11 hrs isn't bad. So maybe 8-7? You may find when you drop to one nap he'll sleep more at night? My thoughts anyway ....

hi thank you so much for your post!! i thought about this but dont know how to go about keeping him up til then, and if i do and try and extend his A time throughout the day wont this result in him being OT when it comes to bedtime

Hmm could you stretch A times a little so that his 2nd nap is enough to see him till bedtime?

Hey Kirsty,
It took me a while to realize that the 12 hour day/night isn't an exact science and that bedtime has less to do with what time they wake, and more to do with how much A time they handle.  So if baby wakes at 6am, that doesn't mean baby has to be in bed at 6pm.  Instead, it's how much A time they can handle after that last afternoon nap that dictates the bedtime.  Once I started following that philosophy, I relaxed a bunch and the sleeps went well.  For us that means that bedtime lands a little differently every day...

Believe it or not, an earlier bedtime does not equal earlier wake time a lot of the time.  You might just find that if he wakes from his nap at 3pm, and you put him to bed at 6pm, he may sleep through to 6am.

Although I guess some babies are just early risers, so I don't know what you can do to make him sleep later?!?!?

One last though - at 9 months, most babies are doing 3 hours-3.5 hours A time, so maybe he's ready for you to extend that A time a bit?  Maybe by 10-15 minutes and see how it goes?  For us, morning A time is always short, like 2-2.5 hours, but the rest of the day the A times are 3.5-4 hours.
