What are the alternatives?
« on: March 31, 2009, 16:14:19 pm »
Hello, my DS is 10.5 months.  He is bf and outgrew mspi around 7 months.  I am currently not restricting anything in my diet ;D, but I don't normally eat a lot of dairy anyway.  Now that he is on solids I have been slowly introducing dairy to him to see if he can tolerate it.  He seems to do fine with a little cheese, although I did notice some runny stools at first and he can tolerate some butter (on pasta or toast).  I tried yogurt a few days ago.  He had it for breakfast one day and it didn't seem to bother him much but he had a bad night that night, so I tried it again the next day.  The day was ok, so to make sure, I gave it to him for dinner.  He had a terrible night that night, up every hour or so.  Lots of squirming, his tummy was firm I think from gas.   I have not given him any dairy for the last 3 days and he is back to normal.

I was only planning on bf up to a year and am starting to think about weaning in the next couple of months.  I'm wondering what my alternatives are.  Should I just try milk when he hits a year and see if he reacts or  should I start with something else? I have tried formula in the past and he can't stand it.  Spits it out, so I don't know if he can tolerate it or not.  Thanks for any help!

By the sounds of it he still cannot tolerate the dairy and he'd probably have a bad reaction with straight milk.  The alternatives are Rice Milk, Almond Milk, Hemp Milk, and Soy Milk.  Soy may cause problems too though, may not.  Most babies that cannot tolerate milk can not also tolerate soy.  I myself went the rice milk route, there are tons of options in the organic section of the grocery store.  Other mom's choose different milks.  :)  They even come in different flavours like vanilla and chocolate :)
