4 months - adding another NW
« on: April 28, 2009, 11:01:51 am »
My LO has been a good night sleeper, waking up around 3:30 for a quick feed and then always back to sleep until about 6:30.  In the last 3 days, she's woken at 5:40-5:50 for some unknown reason.  She is difficult to get back to sleep and DH ends up rocking her for a bit.

Her day sleeps have improved dramatically over the past couple of weeks.  If we time it right, she can give us 1.5-2 hrs.  The problem is her A times are short, but that is all she is able to handle right now.  They are currently at 1 hr 20-1hr25 mins.  Anything more and we're looking at a 30 minute nap.  On Sunday she had a 2 hr, 1.5 hr, 1.5 hr and 50 minute nap all spaces 1 hr 20 minutes apart.

I'm confused as to why she is waking up before 6.  Hoping this is just a phase.  Any ideas?

Here's what today looks like so far.. i'll update as the day goes on..

In bed Monday night just after 7

The new NW makes it hard to do a textbook EASY.  Right now i'm sticking to feeding her every three hours so sometime in the middle of her A time as opposed

to at the beginning.

Slept 7 - 3:20 and then had a feed.
Woke at 5:40 - fed and put back in crib, but would not go back to sleep unless rocked.
DH rocked her and she slept until 7:10 (i think she may have been awake earlier though - 7:10 is when i heard her on the monitor)

E - 8:00
A - 7:10 - 8:23
S - 8:23 - 9:55 (1.5 hr nap)

E - 10:45
A - 9:55 - 11:10 (1 hr 15 mins A time - she was rubbing her eyes and tired)
S - 11:10 - 12:37   (woke at 38 min point, plugged soother in continued sleeping)

E - 1:45
A - 12:37 - 2:01 (1 hr 23 mins A time)
S - 2:01 -  3:20      (woke at the 30 min mark - had to put soother back in several times.  She went down to sleep too late and did not have a good nap)

E - 4:15
A - 3:20 - 4:38
S - 4:38 - 5:08 (30 mins of sleep)

Bedtime - 6:30

She woke up for the day (Wednesday) at 5:50 - happy

For the paci.. if you catch her at the right A time, she sleeps through no problem, no paci spit out!

Her A time is the biggest problem right now.  It seems so short.. she gets tired really quickly.

JLMom-This sounds similar to my DS#2 (he's 15 weeks). Can't tolerate much more than 1 hr. 20 or so minutes (though am trying to slowly extend but is difficult with those darn 45 mins.naps!!!) and same night wakings (he used to sleep 7pm till 3 or 4 am and feed then up for the day around 7am), but just added a second nightwaking/feeding (wouldn't settle with paci, had to feed). I do recall with my first  DS a growth spurt around 4 months. Does your LO seem more hungry during the day? I agree with Jane you need to slowly increase A times to get up to a 4 hour easy but maybe she needs more calories in as well. What do you think Jane?

Thanks!!!

We are attempting to increase her.  I put her down at 1 hr 25 mins this morning. We'll see how that goes.

Can the swaddle become a prop?  We're finding that she is busting out of it a couple of times a night now.  Last night she was up just before 2.  She had completely gotten out.  We reswaddled her and she fell back asleep quickly.  The thing is, i'm not sure if she is totally ready to be out of her swaddle.  We tried a few weeks ago and it was a very long night.  Any thoughts on this?

ETA - I BF her about 6-7 times a day.  Right after she wakes from her catnap, she gets BFed and then she gets a bottle of formula right before bed.  Would that not be enough calories?

Arg.. i stretched her from 1 hr 13 mins yesterday to 1 hr 25 mins today and she woke at 30 minutes.  I put the soother back in.. we'll see how this goes..

Wake-up:  6:30

E - 6:45
A - 6:30-7:56
S -7:56 -

I don't know if she's waking because she's OT or UT.  She seemed tired.  She yawned...

She is in a grobag and then we use the miracle blanket to swaddle her arms in.  Maybe she is ready to try one arm out!!  Thanks!

The new NW makes it hard to do a textbook EASY.  Right now i'm sticking to feeding her every three hours so sometime in the middle of her A time as opposed
IMHO with a BF baby, you cannot do EASY by the clock & get a "textbook" EASY as you cannot measure the calories that the LO is taking.  Tracy's intention was not to do things by the clock but to have a routine that LO's and Mommies could have some predictability.
So that's my 2 c worth there.
I think you need to concentrate on feeding your LO when she wakes and only then.  She may only be taking smaller feeds if she is being fed every 3 hours and I'm wondering if you try feeding her when she wakes only if she'll boost the volume she takes with each feed and consequently slide into a 4hr EASY.  (I'm useless at 'moving' LO's from 3hr to 4hr as both my boys did it for me :-[)

In terms of how much calories she gets the basic 'rule of thumb' for assessing if BF babies are getting enough is (as per another BFing Mom)
The 3 things that you need to ask are:
1) Is baby happy & content when she comes off (i.e. not rooting for more)?
2) Are there enough wet diapers?
3) Is baby gaining?
If the answers are all YES, then you're doing fine.  :-*

If she's breaking out of the swaddle, then let her be.  Again it will take about 3 or 4 nights but she will get how to put herself back to sleep.  I was reading in BWSAYP that Tracy suggests that around 4 months is when parents should start unswaddling their children as it is when they start to find their fingers and self-soothe.

8) I BFd a combined total of 4y, 1m & 1d
