can formula cause rashes?
« on: April 06, 2009, 23:37:21 pm »
I introduced formula to my BF baby just last week.  He is only getting 2 oz a day.  A couple of days ago, he started a red rash on his bum, shoulders and torso and on his cheeks and chin.  Is this an allergic reaction?  He is on good start .

Definitley sounds like it could be an allergy.

I am going to pop this post over to Allergies, I am sure you will get a lot of advice over there.

I don't think formula per se would cause a rash but an alergic reaction to something that's in it sounds pretty likely.  May I ask why you're introducing formula at this point?  - Only in that if it's a supply issue or a problem with nursing, we could probably find a solution for you...

Is it sort of like dry eczema-like patches? My DS had the same reaction to milk-based formula, so we switched him to soy.

I introduced formula in order to give him his DF in a bottle.  I am finding it annoying to have to pump every night and I only get 4 oz and he is taking 5oz.  The rash is in patches were his clothes seem to rub and on his chest, it looks like millions of little raised red bumps.  It has been about 4 days now that I stopped the formula and the rash is still there.  It seemed to flair up in the bath yesterday??

Hmm, have you changed the baby bath bubbles or soap etc?  Or washing powder/fabric conditioner?

You can get hypoallergenic formula if that is the culprit but sounds like it could be something else at play...

It's possible.  If it is eczema it can take awhile for it to go away, if it's being caused by the formula.  I'd continue to stay away from that formula for now and give it more time to clear up.  If it doesn't after another week at least you know it wasn't the formula.

I know every time I'd bring my son out of a bath the eczema would seem more pronounced and more red.  I would also look into what Jocasta said, anything changed like new washing detergent or new clothes or new moisturizer or soap?

nothing new except laundry detergent on DH and my cloths, the towels too??  Maybe it's that??  Thanks for the advice, I am staying away from the formula until the rash has cleared and I will go from there.  Maybe I will wash his towels in his detergent and see what happends.  Thanks :0)

just an update,  I reintroduced milk based formula and he vomitted for 2 hours, he was lathargic and weak as well. My peds said it must have been a coincidence and to try again and he had the same reaction and this is only on 2 oz!! I switch to Soy and he is keeping it down but notices that after a week of being on the soy formula he is fussy in the evenings.  He also is burping alot and on one ocation had mucus in is poo.  I also think he is teething and am streaching his A time which could acount for the fussiness in the pm??!!  I am so confused and frustrated.  Will I have to avoid milk products that are in baked goods al well, like bread and crackers??

(((hugs))))

It depends on how sensitive your LO is.  My girl is extremely sensitive so I had to cut out all dairy, including trace (i.e., dairy baked in food, whey, caseins, etc).  It seems that he has just reacted to the obvious dairy through the formula right?  He's been fine w/you eating dairy?  Also - about 50% of bubs who are sensitive/allergic to dairy are allergic to soy.  G does ok w/trace soy (both she and I can eat it) however I cannot eat obvious soy.

Whichever way you go (full out eliminating dairy, or just obvious dairy) it takes a couple of weeks for the milk proteins to leave your system and his.  Good luck - it can be very frustrating but will get better!

It could be that your baby is lactose intolerant, but I would talk to your doc about it to be sure. I was breastfeeding my little boy and was giving him about 2 oz. of good start a day, but at 4 weeks old, I upped it to 4-6 oz. He started breaking out in a rash all over his body, was fussy, had trouble sleeping, was vomiting and had diarrhea. I panicked and switched to enfamil and nothing got better (not a good idea). I had him tested and sure enough, he was lactose intolerant.

Well I tend to be all or nothing, lol, but I just knew it was bad enough because of the blood in her stool... the other was trial and error.  I wasn't eating obvious dairy but was eating trace - I immediately took that away and saw a huge improvement.  Because of my history of food allergies though I eventually went to a total elimination diet as she never got rid of the mucousy stools.  Around 7 months we did allergy testing and sure enough she has tons - milk being one of them and the most severe.  Good news is most bubs outgrow them all (I did and I was allergic to EVERYTHING except soy and rice for 2 years!).
