blood in stool after banana?
« on: April 10, 2009, 13:09:57 pm »
Ok so on monday we stopped all his food to find the right food that was causing problems and because he was hungry I decided to puree up some fresh bananas and formula, which was a first for him - hed had it in the jar before and I dont think had any problems. Well yesterday I noticed he had diaherra and thought it looked bloody a bit so it was tested and positive for blood...??? He has been on rice cereal and formula for a few days so there was nothing else in his belly... do you think it was because it was his first real banana? MY Gi has referred me back to the pediatrician which I think is going to refer me to an allergist, I've already made an appointment for the allergist (I alredy had a referral from his MILK protein allergy)..

Does anyone else ever feel like this is their fault? Sometimes I wonder what I did wrong in my pregnancy to cause these gi problems for him. Im trying not too but it just seems to never end and I want my little boy to just eat food.

I also wanted to ask you guys if you do the BLW when you have allergies? Hes nearly 7mo and we are back on rice and formula but we have to start introducing foods again but I'd like to do them with actual food - do you guys do this???

Don't be so hard on yourself :)
I definitely felt the same way.  I kept thinking that if I had eaten better or breastfed that he wouldn't suffer, etc.  This is new territory for us, we aren't doctors, so we do the best we can, and I think we are doing great!

I think BLW is great.  I tried it with my son, but he had such a gag reflex that it wasn't until 2 months ago that he started eating more solid type food, like bread.  Now he's doing great, but if you can do it I'd recommend it.  Especially where you are just going to give him straight fruits and veggies, I'd say why not.  He's still young enough to learn and it's about learning at this point anyway.

What kind of formula is he on?  I'm wondering if it was just a delayed reaction to the formula?  You said he just started the formula in the last couple of days?

I do know of a toddler who was MPI and was also allergic to egg, kiwifruit and banana. Before that I'd never heard of anyone who was allergic to banana so it is possible!

He is on alimentum but he has been on it for at least three months, I just meant that we had stopped any solids that we had introduced in the last couple of months and gone back to just formula and rice cereal. Thank you for your advice, I have to keep reminding myself its not my fault... and Im not a doctor.  :)
We'll have to see how it all goes.

Oh, I see what you are saying.  Yeah, it's like someone else I know on here her son is allergic to potatoes, go figure?!  You just never know.  And sometimes they seem to be okay on a food then find out that they are allergic to it.  Hopefully you'll get more answers when they do all the testing.

Went into the pediatrician today and she is calling the allergist to try and get us in sooner. He still has blood in his stool even though hes only had rice cereal and formula since last wednesday. Makes me nervous but hopefully it will all be gone by Friday - they are going to re-test his stool then and maybe allow some carrots into his diet again or something else to make him feel better hehe hes starving. She warned me that this is probably going to be a long and drawn out process!! (the reintroduction of food, testing and establishing allergies)... I hope its not too terrible?
