Allergist - what will they do?
« on: April 10, 2009, 13:27:17 pm »
OK so these are probably dumb questions and I can ask my pediatrician about it on monday but of course my curiousity is killing me.

What is the skin test like? do they prick the baby? does it hurt them? How do they tell if they are allergic to different foods? Does the baby have to be consuming those things?

Thank you

When we had the skin prick test it was on his arm.  They tested for 13 different things.  They put a drop of whatever they are testing on the spot then prick it with a needle so it gets in their blood.  It hurts.  My son cried the whole time and we had to hold his arm down while they did it.  Thankfully they were fast!  They don't have to consume the foods.
Then they wait about 30min and check back to see if there is any swelling.  It's not conclusive, best to have blood test done at the same time.  Our skin prick test only showed a big swelling to egg, but the blood test also showed allergy to wheat, oats, and barley, but not as high as egg.  Hope that helps! :)

Sophie had this recently. She was just 3 so the nurse drew a caterpillar on her arm and in each bit of the body put a drop of whatever she was testing, then like Mel said pricked it with a tiny needle to get it into the blood.
Sophie was good as gold and very still, I think it must have been quite uncomfortable for her but she didn't cry or try to take her arm away.
We were sent into the waiting area to play for 20 mins they called back to see what came up.

Yes Thank you. I also spoke with my pediatrician about it and she said it all depends on the allergist, so we'll see once we get into him! wish us luck ha
