We waited a month to see the GI specialist for dd who lost weight in February and has had slow weight gain since then.  He looked at her numbers and said he wasn't concerned (he sees much worse) and thinks that her fussiness at the bottle of ebm was not so much reflux but an MSPI issue. He said we might want to stop the rice in her bottles and start meats first, then fruits and veggies, and then add grains around 10 mos.   I haven't heard of starting meats first before.  He also recommended going to formula in a month if she's still having blood in her stool.   :-\  Not sure what to think of it all.

Not sure where you are living, but in most provinces in Canada, they do recommend a meat like chicken or turkey as a first food for babies now.  Especially breastfed babies who are likely getting a bit less iron int heir diets. Babies own iron reserves start dropping at 6 months and it's harder to get additional iron from breastmilk.  You can puree well cooked chicken and add some of baby's usual milk to it until it is a smooth consistency.

If it is MSPI, you don't need to stop breastfeeding, you will just need to cut milk and soy from your own diet.

Sorry so short my LO is crawling away

Thanks for the reply.  I've been dairy/soy free since dd was 6 weeks.  I 'm not also egg free as of a few weeks ago.  If the egg isn't causing the blood in the stool then I'd have to do wheat next.  I think at this point I'm going to try to find a formula she can tolerate w/out too many probs and slowly wean to that.  I've been pumping exclusively for about 1 1/2 mos b/c dd refused bfing but would take ebm out of a bottle.

Thanks for the info about Canada's recs. I think I will get some organic meat this weekend and puree it up.   We just got word that we're supposed to be moving there in THREE weeks!  (Ontario)  That is also adding to my desire to get her on formula as pumping and traveling do not coincide.

I have read also about the meats first especially in bf babies. It just sounds weird to actually do! :) As far as putting her on formula I did the same with my lo after the mspi diagnosis and then reflux and still having issues, I was so tired and had no energy and was feeling terrible (like it was my fault) that blood was in the stool. Considering your pumping you probably went through the withdrawal of breastfeeding so your practically there. Once your lo is on a good formula you will find relief. Im not saying you have to stop but sometimes that relief it can bring for you both can finally lead to some nice time for you both!

I'm in Canada and you're moving here!  :D  I just wanted to let you know that if you end up on a hypoallergenic formula and you have Canadian Medicare it is covered by the government, specifics depend on province, but I hope you'll be able to benefit from it if you can.

I am SO in need of relief from full time pumping, bottle feeding, and multiple NW's due to everything under the sun, I'm sure.  It's taken me this long to accept the fact that dd is not going to go back to bfing. ):  I had such hopes that her reflux meds would solve the issue, but to no avail.  We're excited to go to Canada.  Our first time out of the US.  Thanks for the tip.  I believe our insurance will remain w/ our American company as we're there on business but I'm not totally sure how it all works.

Melanie,
Just curious how you went about finding if medicare covered your formula.  I am in Saskatchewan and we just started ds on Alimentum and if he needs to be on it would love to have some of it covered.  We also have inurance through Great west life and wonder if private insurance companies possibly cover?  Was your formula covered under your provincal plan?

Well I found out because here when I was prescribed it from the dietitian at the hospital.  She is the one who told me, and I just pick it up at the public health building.  I would ask your doctor, or call the receptionist and as if she knows.  OR I'm assuming there is a 1-800 number for Medicare and you can ask them.  I know it varies per province.  Some province will cover so much depending on your income.

Some insurance companies may cover it, I know my doesn't as I looked there first before I found out our medicare covers it.  Here is a link to find out though for that: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=135430.0

To see if your GW plan will cover it, it's best to check with them directly -- if your private coverage is provided by an employer, they will have negotiated certain things to be included or excluded to keep premiums (for employer and employee) to a level that they are happy with.  So, it's possible they will cover some, part or all, depending on the coverage you have. I would suggest getting your plan booklet and reading through and if you aren't able to get the info then call up GW with your plan number and membership number and ask them directly - I dealt with GW a LOT in my job and they are very helpful!

If they do cover it, what you will need to do is get a prescription for it, and send a copy of the prescription to them with your first claim. You will have to have the script filled at the pharmacy rather than buying it off the shelf, and keep your receipts. Then there may be a portion that you have to pay and a portion they pay (for instance they may pay 80% of the cost up to a maximum per year) but this will again depend on the specific coverage that has been negotiated in your plan.

HTH!
