Intolerance to what??????
« on: April 14, 2009, 11:17:33 am »
Our lo is now 6 months old. He has been sick quite a lot since 9 weeks old. He has been battling with sick and constipation for the last 10 weeks since he moved onto formula milk full time. Doctor prescribed ranitidine for reflux (which has helped a bit, and stopped his food pipe from being irritated) but not the sick.

The sick when it comes (approx 20-30 times per day) is more like little possets of about 5-20ml a time. The constipation goes in waves of 3days normal and 4 days of constipation. He is still having the ranitidine and now lactulose (which is not helping, now having 7.5mls a day)

Over the last week we tried a lactose free formula, which worked wonders for 3 days (no sick at all!) and gradulally went back to normal over the next 4 days.

Our health visitor has now prescribed soy milk to see if its a milk intolerance, and we are waiting to see paed docs at the hospital.

Has anyone else experienced this, and got a proper diagnosis of what is the matter with their lo? I am so confused, as he doesnt seem to fit in any of the usual categories!!

Thanks,
Lili xx

Hey sweetie,
Just a thought our LOs reflux/vomiting always seemed to get worse when he got constipated and Zantac (ranitidine) can cause constipation. Have you tried a little watered down prune juice to keep things moving for your LO??  It really really works.

I have a recipe which also works as they get a little older (more on solids) where you soak a couple of dried apricots and prunes in cold water for 2 hours, then simmer with water to just cover them...blend and give your LO a little bit (wait a while 'cause it can get things moving pretty quickly and give a little more if no action)...REALLY has helped our LO.

Reflux babies apparently commonly have a slowing of the lower gut which causes the constipation (and formula and reflux meds often exacerbate this), it's really nice to have a natural approach to helping this :)

Our LO just went through stages where the reflux was terrible and then it would settle for a few days and we would think it was getting better then it would go back to terrible again.  We never had any intolerance diagnosed (no rashes, wheezing etc to indicate intolerance) and reflux isn't always a food related issue, sometimes just anatomical!!

Lili hang in there and get as much help as you can. As far as I know there is nothing that they can give to stop the throwing up (although our doctor suggested thickening our LOs bottles with 1 teaspoon of cornflour - make sure it's corn not wheat, and using normal formula because there wasn't an intolerance there and it was much cheaper than buying special thickened ones)...you can also add infant gaviscon to their bottles, this is a thickener and a mild antacid (but can also cause constipation so beware)...Hope you get some more answers soon, keep chatting it will really help

:) Lizzie

Hi Lili

HUGS !!

My DD is now 17 weeks.  She is on Ranitidine and it stopped the painful acid reflux but didn't stop the almost constant possetting so paed also put her on Infant Gaviscon sachets.  The result was an immediate stop in spitting up !  (She was also diagnosed with MSPI so is on Nutramigen)

Down side for her though it has compounded the constipation she was already starting to get from the ranitidine. She has now also decreased her intake again of milk (not sure if meds, formula or teething) so I am waiting for my health visitor to drop in before I ring the paed as am having a teat flow dilemma  ::)

I thought this would be less complicated second time round !!  ;D

Hi spectra,
Soya mlk seems to be having an improvment in our lo. He is now only being sick about 6-10x a day which is a massive improvement. I think he is going to eventually get diagnosed with a double issue, a milk intolerance AND reflux. At least with the ranitidine he has not got an inflamed oesophagus now so has stopped screaming.

I have also stopped the lactulose, and since starting the soya formula he has not had constipation so at least that is better, and my washing machine is getting a bit of a rest as the sick is reduced now.

Still waiting to see the paed.

will keep you posted

new update:
sick is getting worse again and last 3 days the constipation has re-reared its ugly head. I think maybe we are heading down the MSPI route.

We have had the paed appointment through, but its not till 28th May. Not sure i can cope with the little guy having these issues for another month. When i have spoken to the appointment lady, she said the referral was being treated as routine, and not urgent as the GP had requested. Is this just because there are babies with more severe issues? or that they think i am making more hassle than necessary over this?

Has anyone else had a long wait to see the paed over these issues?

Could you call your GP and maybe they'll call and hassle the ped?  I only had to wait a week as I was in the room when my GP called the ped directly to make the appt asap.  If that doesn't work perhaps call the ped back and say things are getting worse and this is an emergency, tell them you need to come in asap just like your GP had originally requested.  I hope you get some headway on this!  Let us know what happens.

Good luck sweetie, hassle hassle hassle until you get in!!!  This has gone on long enough and you need help :)  They may not consider it urgent because it isn't life threatening, but it's too hard and you need answers and a plan to minimise all the throwing up...I so wish you luck, keep us posted

We have out Paed appoitment in 2 DAYS!! Woop! Thought this time would never come.

Does anyone have any advice to what i should ask, or know of any tests that can be done to check for MSPI?  What is the minimum follow up/action i should expect from the docs?

TIA

I would definitely ask your doctor about the MSPI, there are tests that can be done, but it's not simple blood tests and most docs don't do it and/or don't even know about it.  I know a lot of homeopath docs know more about the intolerance testing.  Not sure why.  I hope your doctor is someone who is open to the possibilities of intolerances.

I would write down, if you haven't already, all the symptoms your lo has.  Write out if anything changed when you switched formulas, etc.  Make sure you write down any questions/concerns now, because you may forget then remember after you left the office.  If you have a resistant doc, be persistent and insist on SOMETHING to be done.  I regret that I was persistent enough in the beginning.  Ask about a special formula that may work best with the constant throwing up, perhaps a few different to try, any specialist that he should see.  Nothing wrong with going overboard with questions and concerns.  I hope things go well for you, keep us updated. :)

Hey.

as i kinda suspected we have come away from childrens op's with less than we hoped. the doc did not really listen to us, just said it could be milk intolerance but keep on the soy milk and try a motility drug to see if moving things along quicker. Its called domperidone (anyone know anything about it?- i will also post this on the health board too....) She also said we could increase the ranitidine, although not sure how that will help because it only reduces stomach acid!!

She wants us to go back in 2 months (even though the note on the medicine says they should only take it for 4 weeks before a review.

Going to see the health visitor on monday to discuss it all as very confused and disappointed. I guess i built up to them changing his formula to a MSPI one but she didnt seem to get the fact that he also has issues with the soy milk!!

Advice please.....

TIA

I'd definitely bring this up with your health visitor, perhaps they can help speed the review up, tell them the soy isn't working either and hopefully something can be done.  Be VERY pushy.  :)

Geeze that SUCKS....it is so bad when you come away without any new info as to how to help your LO.  I have been there, actually we probably all have!

I was put on domperidone to increase my milk supply (it's also a galactagogue as well as a motility drug), it will increase the rate at which your LOs tummy empties, the theory is that by doing so the pressure is reduced and there is less time and likelyhood that the milk can regurgitate up into the oesophagus.  If you are going to put your LO on the drug, like all meds just keep a really close eye on it and bear in mind the common side effects (can cause headaches etc)....You may find that it does really help the symptoms.

I would also head to a naturopath to do some intolerance testing since your doc isn't pursuing this....if soy is starting to cause issues the naturopath should be able to help you work out what to try :)

Good luck lovely, sorry the docs appt was a let down
HUGE HUGS to you all
Lizzie
