10 weeks old- still feeding every 3 hours through the night
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:36:15 am »
Hi - please can someone help?

My DS ia 10 weeks old and weighs 5.2kg.

He has a good EASY daytime routine, but no matter what, still wakes to feed every 3 hours through the night. When he wakes, he doesn't fuss - just feeds and goes back to sleep.

I have tried 'tanking him up' but he's reluctant to take any extra before the 3 hours. I have tried increasing his daily ounces, but until last week, we struggled to get him to finish a 3oz bottle- since last week he has graduated to 4oz bottles, but it's made no difference to him waking for night feeds.

I have also tried pacifying him with a dummy when he wakes, or offering water instead but he is clearly hungry, and just gets aggitated and upset until he gets his milk. He is totally formula fed.

This is his routine....

E- 7-730am
A-
S- 830am - naps for about 1 hour

E- 10-1030am
A-
S- 1130am - naps for between 1 and 2 hours

E- 1-130pm
A-
S- 230pm- naps for between 1 and 2 hours

E- 4-4.30pm
A-
S- 530pm- naps for about 1½ hours

E-700pm
A- bath
S- in bed for the evening

E- D/F at 10pm

wakes to feed again at 1am and 4am  :-\

Any ideas?

I would feed him if he is obviously hungry. Their tummies are roughly the size of their fist, so something that size isn't going to hold a lot. 3 hourly at night at this age isn't uncommon.

He will stretch out his feeds as his tummy gets bigger and he is able to take more milk.

He seems to be on the smaller side and his tummy probably won't hold more than 4 oz. That won't last long. 3 hourly at night is quite good at that age, if he takes around 5, you can try 4 hourly at night, that would be a df and only one additional feed at maybe 3 or 4 am. :)

Thank you both for the reassurance  :)

I know we shouldn't compare babies, it's just that on another forum where I post, my little man is in the minority of babies a similar age who aren't going 6+ hours overnight  :-\ I just wondered why they can and he can't. He was 3.5kg at birth, so not a small baby then, but hasn't been quick in putting on weight.

The positive side is that he is only awake for 5-10 minutes during these night feeds as he settles again almost instantly.

Honestly, your baby isn't unusual. He really is doing great.  :) :-*

Totally agree with the others.  Many 2 month olds still need frequent feedings at night!!  Before you know it, he will stretching out longer between night time feeds!!  For now, I know it is exhausting!!
