15 mth EW 90% of time.. how do I change this
« on: April 19, 2009, 11:11:30 am »
We have always struggled with EW, but now I am really beginning to realize that it is happening because (I think) she is getting too much sleep during the day.
We are in this viscous cycle of EW lead to early morning naps etc.

Schedule
Wake 5am
Leave her in crib as long as I can before she starts crying
6am -  bottle
7am - breakfast
830 - nap
10 - wake and snack
1130 - lunch
130-3 nap
3 nap
5 dinner
6 bath
630 bed

I know that she should be on a 12 hr schedule, but with work, I cant get her to bed before 630

I think that she might be ready for a 2-1 nap switch, but we cannot seem to get there because she wakes up so early in the morning that she needs that sleep.

there are days where she has only 1 nap and sometimes good and other times a disaster. If she is OT she will only end up sleeping fr 1 hr the whole day and then goes to bed early and then gets up early the next etc.

I find if I wake her from her naps she is miserable and continues to be the whole day.
The days that she sleeps only 2 hours or so are the days that she will sleep in the next day till 6
Not sure where to start.
Do I start with a 2-1 nap switch.
Do I wake her up from her naps at the 1 hr mark for a total of 2 hours a day and hope that she will be ok..

Thanks

I'd do two things - first push her first morning nap later, to 9.30 at the absolute earliest, probably even 10am. Keep it at that time no matter how early she wakes. Then I'd limit that nap to 30 mins (you could do 45 mins at first) in preparation for the 2-1 switch, and keep a longer pm nap (3hrs A time after a 30mins nap and 3.5hrs A time after a 45 mins nap worked for us).

I don't know that many are really doing 12 hour nights once they hit toddler age, so if your aim is a 6.30 am wake up I'd go for bed at 7pm.

I hope this helps

anna

i was going to say the same as Anna. I remember with my lo and EW, that I had to have her first nap at 9am at the earliest or i would get antoher ew.  I know it can be hard when they are so tired, but maybe do somethign that you know will keep her occupied/distracted. I also limited it esp at first as she would sleep a long time as she was tired, but that would rob the next morning too. weird how that works but at this age it does.

now that Lil is 2.5 i find that if her nap is too late she will wake early, go figure!

btw, how old is she?

Hi

I am back. So the schedule has changed and we have out her on half hour nap in the mroning at 930am and then 3 hours later for an aft nap. The first week or so it was great she was waking up at 615 or 630. Fantastic. The last week or so she is now getting up again at 5. Her schedule looks like this

Wake 5am
Leave her in crib as long as I can before she starts crying
6am -  bottle
7am - breakfast
930 - nap
10 - wake and snack
1130 - lunch
130-3 nap
3 snack
5 dinner
630 bath
7 bed (this has been pushed by an half an hour)

I am not sure if she is waking up because she is OT. She is only getting about 10 hours at night and about 2 hours a day.
She is in daycare and I find there are days when they dont put her down for a morning nap because they think she isnt tired even though I said i think she needs it because she woke up so early in the day.
Not sure what to do next?

We were in this exact same position at 14 months. (((hugs)))

What time does she have her lunch at daycare? Can she have a nap at 12noon? When Stan hit 15 months we went cold turkey to one nap per day at 12, regardless what time he woke up in the morning. It took a few weeks but now (at last! After MONTHS of EWs!) he's getting usually 1.5-2hrs nap at nursery (2.5hrs at home), and 11.5 hrs at night. It takes some time to settle into the one nap routine - do you think she can handle it?

i do think she could def handle it because there are many days that she does go down without a morning nap., but i think that she is getting OT that way. I don't know. She is only getting 10 hours a night. Now she has never been a 12 hour nighter always 11hour. They have luncha t daycare 1130. I think they could probably get her down by 12:15 or so.

What time does Stan go to bed and wake up?

Can I jump in here as this sounds exactly like my dd (14mo). In fact, it could be her! I'd like to try these ideas, but at the moment she has 3 molars coming in at the same time and is miserable. Should I wait for that to stop (would be weeks ::)) or do you think I should just go for it? Am so tired of getting up before 6am :(

When we first switched to 1 nap, I would do an early bed. He would still wake up at 5.30, but he was asleep for 6.30pm so he was getting 11 hour nights. At first his one naps would be 1 hour or 1.5, but they got longer. When he did a longer nap (2hrs plus) I would do a 7pm bed. Then after MONTHS (literally maybe 4 months) of 10.5 hour nights and EWs, he started waking up at 7am! I was really losing hope that it would ever happen. Now his routine is:

6.45-7.15: wake up
12.15: nap (1.5-2.5hrs)
bed at 7 or 7.30 depending on how the day's nap went
