I managed to get 40 min from him.  He was up at 5:05, so I opted for a 7:20 bedtime, keeping activity level pretty low.  He had a great night.  7:20 - 6:40 (11 hrs 20 min).  I'm thinking it's because I gave him a short A, since he had the short OT pm nap.

I do have to say that at least yesterday I learned what his A should probably be.  I maybe would have had a good pm nap if I hadn't gone in the room and disturbed him!!!  Will go for another 3.5 hr A this morning.

The morning nap went well.  1 hr 10 min nap on 3 hrs 35 min A.  The afternoon did not go well again...I put him down at 3 1/2 hrs.  He played for about 20 min, then started to whine, not crying, just whining.  Then, the crying started.  I went in and laid him down (he was sitting up), and he went to sleep right away, but only slept for 35 min.  This was on 4 hrs 10 min A, which I know was way too much!  Tried to extend, but it was not happening.  What I am thinking is that since he was playful when I put him down, maybe he needs a bit more A before the pm nap?  Do you think I should maybe try for 3 hrs 40 min or 3 hrs 45 min tomorrow?  He just played too much, I think, and then got himself OT.  It seems there is such a fine line between UT and OT...the trouble is finding exactly the right spot!

hi Kara!! Yay for the long am nap, boo for the short pm nap! :)
I totally agree with you about having a longer A time before the pm nap.  It sounds like your lo was a bit UT when you put him down, but then he started to play and got OT.  So, try 3 hr 40 min after anything longer than 1 hr am nap.
When this happens to me, I always give my lo 10 min for him to play in his crib and fall asleep.  If after 10 min he is still playing, then I go to him and lay him down.  This usually helps, b/c as soon as I lay him down, he goes to sleep.

Let us know how your night goes!

Thanks, Alexa!!
He went to sleep for the night at 7:10.  He was up from nap 2 at 4:10, so that may have been a bit too long of an A coming off of a short nap, but I was afraid to put him to bed any earlier!  It is now 8:40, and haven't heard a peep.  NW have never really been a problem, though...EW sometimes, but napping has always been our biggest issue!

I appreciate all of your help!
Kara

7:10 - 6:30...yay!!!  Hopefully naps will go well today!

*Update:  Nap 1:  9:55-11:00 (1 hr 5 min)...wasn't quite 3 1/2 hrs A, but he was practically falling asleep during
wd, so I just put him down.  He went to sleep immediately, so he must have been tired!

Will try for 3 hrs 40 min A for Nap 2...I'm scared of OT!!!  I'll keep very close watch on him!

Ok...so totally confused now!

Was trying for 3hrs 40 min for the 2nd A...he did fall asleep at 3 hrs 40 min.  That was 2:40.  I peeped in at 15 min, and noticed that he didn't have his paci in...so I thought it might be a problem.  Sure enough, at 3:10 (30 min mark), I heard crying.  I laid him down with paci, and he stopped immediately, and was calm, with eyes open.  2 min. later, he was back asleep.  Since he woke at 30 min mark, was he OT, or was it just the paci issue maybe?

Since I brought that up, I would love to get rid of it.  He only gets it for sleep.  I was hoping to get naps all sorted before I attempted that, but it seems naps are a work in progress always.  What do you think?

I will post and let you know what time the pm nap ended.

*Update:  He slept until 3:50...that was 1 hr 10 min if you don't count the couple of minutes in the middle.

So now I'm wondering...what should bedtime be?  Yesterday bedtime was 3 hrs after pm nap, but the pm nap was only 35 min.  So, should I go with a 3.5 A before bed?

yeap!! I think I would go 3.25 - 3.5 hrs before bedtime!!  ;)

I think the paci may be part of the sleep issues!! IF you are brave enough, then get rid of it!! ;) You can start a post on the Props board and you will get great help over there!! The moms there have lots of experience with paci addiction!! :-*

Last night was 7:25 - 6:45.

Nap 1 today was 10:20 - 11:00 (Only 40 min on 3 hrs 35 min A...not sure why this happened)

I think OT b/c woke crying.  Had been doing 3 1/2 hrs A...yesterday was 3 hrs 25 min A.  Tried to extend, but no go after 10 min, so I just got him up and am hoping for a long pm nap...fingers crossed!

Am trying for a 3 hr A after that short am nap.

**OK...this is NOT FUN!  Put him down at 1:55.  Crib party began.  Went in at 2:05 to resettle.  Got drowsy as I was singing song.  Put him back down, and the crib party continued.  Went back at 2:15...same thing again!  Went back at 2:25...now 2:30 and still not sleeping!

**Update again...he fell asleep at 2:35, with no crying.  Fingers crossed!

...3:10 (35 min) the crying began!  He did settle back within about 2 min.  Wondering what I should do about bedtime?

Did he go back to sleep in the pm nap? When did he wake up?

I think I would move bedtime 15 min earlier

Yes...the nap started at 2:35.  Woke at 3:10, was back asleep in 2 min.  Woke at 3:35, was back asleep in a couple of seconds.  It is now 4:05, and still asleep.

Bedtime has not been consistent lately.  (It depends on when he wakes from pm nap and how long it was)  It is almost always between 7:05 and 7:30.

**He woke at 4:15.  That was a 1 hr 40 min nap, but woke twice during.  I'm reposting today's routine to see if anyone has suggestions on what the problem may be:

Wake:  6:45
Nap 1:  10:20 - 11:00 (3 hrs 35 min A.  Went to sleep with a cry and woke really crying, unable to settle)
Was a little grumpy during first part of A, but cheered up
Nap 2:  2:35 - 4:15 (3 hrs 35 min A...tried for shorter A, but he was partying in the crib...had to resettle 3 times.  Woke twice
during nap, but was able to settle quickly)
Woke crying, but happy & playing now.

Thanks to everyone!
Kara
