blood in stool at 11 months?
« on: May 04, 2009, 11:55:57 am »
My DS2 is MSPI and we were told to challenge with milk at 12 months. Due to starting childcare tomorrow, where he might pick up crumbs etc off the ground, I thought !'d start a bit early, at 11 months. I tried him on a little bit of butter. Well a day later and he had blood in his stool! It freaked me out a bit. He wasn't constipated so I guess it must have been the butter? He did also come down with gastro a day later but his stool was firm when we saw the blood. We are getting a stool sample ananlysed to make sure.

Anyway the paediatrician said that milk protein induced enterocolitis is rare but not unknown at this age. Is that true? Any one else had blood in stool from milk protein intolerance at around 12 months old?

Yes! My dd had blood in her stool at from about 4 weeks of age, we went to see 2 peds and a hospital visit to find out the problem. It was only a random doctor at the hospital that was chatting with us and happened to ask why we were there that said "oh, blood? your dd has a milk PROTEIN allergy (different from a lactose intolerance)". I had to eliminate all milk products/byproducts from my diet until she was 18 months. The odd time someone would screw up in a restaurant and I had a milk product in my meal (without taste or knowing it) she would end up with blood in her stool the next day. BTW, don't know why so many doctors are ignorant to this, it's not "rare", aside from the other moms on here dealing with milk protein allergies, 3 of my good friends los have/had los with it too that have actually had blood in their stools from milk products right up until they got over their allergies.

My lo was able to tolerate plain yogurt around 14 months, but not cow's milk until about 18 months. At 12 months we started fortified unsweetened rice milk and I continued to bf until 18 months. You can always try the formula that is hypo non-allergenic. The only thing we had to watch with the rice milk and no milk products was keeping up her fat intake as she missed so many calories from milk products. Our ped gave us a list of foods for her to eat that were higher in cals and fat than others. Also recommended stuff like chicken legs with skin and fat on vs. white chicken breast with no skin, etc. Basically most of her fats were from protein foods.

I'd wait until the blood clears, then try again but with plain yogurt. I'd do the butter and milk last. Our allergist did say to start challenging at 12 months and try every few weeks or month.

Thanks for the reply Marian, sounds like you've been through it all!  So did your DD still have blood after a restaurant slip up at this age? Sounds like your friends have had to deal with this too! I was talking to a friend of mine whose baby was MSPI but she never had blood, just rashes, vomiting and irritability.

I'm to try again in 3 months, I'll try sheep's milk yoghurt next time in case he is one of the lucky one who can have sheep/goats' milk but not cows' milk - unlikely I know. The reason I chose butter this time is that he had his first childcare session today, they give the kids crackers made with butter and the crumbs get dropped on the ground. Our first visit I had to follow DS2 and stop him from stealing the other kids' crackers!

I'm still BFing and I'm getting sick of being on a dairy free diet. You did well to last till 18 months!

I'm not sure if there is an age where they stop getting blood in their stool.  Let us know how the test results go.  I'm really curious now.  :)

It's been so long that I don't remember it all but I remember at least 2x when she had blood in her stool at an older age. One time was me eating in a restaurant and ordering pasta- I ate about half and then and noticed something slightly stringy- they had started to shred cheese but immediately stopped (and gave it to me anyways >:(). She had blood in her stool the next day and I remember it took about 2 weeks to totally clear up, she was about 11 months old at this time. At 12.5 months we had a ped allergist appt and a "milk challenge", they gave her a spoon of milk and wanted to wait to see if she broke into a rash or vomit, etc., they were going to do this for a 4 hour span. After about the 3rd spoon I told them she doesn't get rashes, doesn't vomit, or have any reaction, other than the blood. Sure enough, the next day she had blood in her stool. So, her blood in stool didn't stop until she was over her allergy, I had to be really careful about her and I not getting milk/milk products. For us the goat's products didn't work, I had tried goat's milk feta myself and she reacted. The blood was always sort of thick, stringy and clumpy, not runny, like if you were to cut your finger.
