Need a Plan for Challenging Her Intolerence, any ideas?
« on: May 02, 2009, 21:00:01 pm »
Hi all

Cara, 6 mo, is lactose intolerent and has been on Enfmail O-Lac for 4 weeks now. After 2 weeks I tried her with some lactose at breakfast time but she had awful wind and was awake with tummy pain that night so she's had no lactose since then. She's been really well and sleeping like a dream since we changed her milk.....anyway. I need a plan to wean her back on to milk but don't know whatto do when she eventually tolerates the lactose again. ie how slowly to introduce it, when to change her milk, how to change the milk etc etc. The information I got from my doctor and pharmacist was very vague and i don't do vague very well, I need a plan of action .

can anyone advise me please?

TIA

Fran

Hi Fran,
((hugs)) to you and your little bub.

I'm curious why you want to challenge so early?  Honestly, for me I wouldn't even think about it until closer til a year.  If the Enfamil is working I'd stick with it especially since it seems she has such a painful reaction (my dd's allergic reactions are similar and I know it's no fun for anyone!). Anything w/milk I would wait as long as possible.  I'm not familiar w/lactose intolerant though, so don't know if it's advised to challenge early.  6 months seems really young though - you wouldn't even do cheese/yogurt until 9-ish months with a baby with no intolerances.

Don't know if this helped at all but w/my milk allergic bub I'm not even thinking of going near a milk product until 12 months even that is early to me, maybe closer to 18 months...

Good luck!
xo

Yes I agree to wait longer, perhaps even months  for their system to fully heal.  Can your lo be on that special formula for that long?  I know we discussed this before, and I wasn't sure if that formula is meant to be on long term or not.

Hi! My lo has a milk allergy as well, and our paediatrician told us not to give any milk products (including cheese, yoghurt, etc) until at least 1 year old, and even then to introduce it very slowly. I would say that if she's doing well on the formula to continue with it until she's a bit older. Good luck!

Formula is supposed to be used for 6-8 weeks but I think I'll phone their care line tomorrow. The reason I was challenging so soon was because that's what the feeding clinic recommended. My gut instinct is to leave well enough alone, she is thriving on the milk and is a happy painfree baby, just the way I like her!! Think I'll leave it for another few months. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I was told after a failed trial at 11 months to try again in 3 months - does that help?
