Does this sound ok?
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:57:52 am »
Ok so this is my plan for weaning the df. Does it sound ok? Any suggestions would be great as am nervous about it! We seem to have great nights at the moment even though day naps are all over the place so don't want to mess up the nights!!!

My DS is 6 months and 1 week and he has had a df at 10pm since about 4 weeks old. We started with the Gina Ford way of doing it so we woke him and changed him before feeding but for the last month or two it has been a df or as close as we can get to it!

He is now taking 6oz at 10pm and my plan is to wean him slowly over the next month. He is on 3 solid meals a day but not very keen on lunch. He drinks tons of milk so that may have somehting to do with it!

My plan is to reduce his df to 5oz on Saturday and stick with this for a week. He was taking 8oz and we have got down to 6 slowly.
Then I am planning to give 4oz half an hour earlier for 3 days, 3oz half an hour earlier for 3 days so making it at 9pm and then either 3oz at 8.30pm or 2oz. I am sure he will get cross if he wakes up for 2 oz so might just bring time forward but stick to 3oz. Then I was thinking of just increasing his bedtime feed to 8 or 9oz at usual time. At the moment he has 7oz at bedtime.

Does that sound ok? I am a bit confused about adding milk to day feeds as he already takes a lot - it would mean going to 9oz for all feeds. Is that ok or would it be better to try and give more solid???

I would love to wean this feed but it feels like a big step!

Thanks for the help.

Hi Becky,

We did something similar to this too. (But I did use the Tracy methiod combined with another -probaby shouldn't confess that here! ::) ;)It is scary cause you don't want to  ruin those lovely night sleeps..... something I that I did was write out a plan of how long I thought it mght take - helped me cause I like to know what I'm up for!...also if she woke up at any point  in the night during the weaning process. I would take it back to the amount that she was having before the wake up, IYKWIM! stay there for 3 more nights then.. recommence the weaning.....let me know if that's too confusing  :o
Not sure about the Q about  adding to the Day feeds in your case though, so hopefully you'll get a response by me bumping you up! I added 25mls to each feed gradually as Tracy recommends..

Anyhoo Good Luck! you can do it.....sending you some positive vibes!

Thanks Anna. Yes I have written out a plan and have started to very gradually cut down before we actually go for it in about 10 days time. My DS loves his milk so am a bit apprehensive but I think it is time to give it a go. Becky x

Just wanted to drop off some {{{{hugs}}}}.

I was really scared about weaning the DF too!   What we did was reduce by 30 mls every 3 days and, at the same time, move the DF 15 mins earlier every 3 days.  It worked like a charm, but my fingernails did get an awful lot shorter from all the fretting, lol.

Good luck! :-*

Thank you! Helps to know others have felt the same. How old was your LO when you did it?

That makes me feel better actually as DS is 6 months and a week but becuase he is now bottle fed I feel he should be able to drop the df even though TRacey says 7 months. We ahve dropped from 8 to 6oz and that is ok although I am finding that becuase he often wakes when we do it (even though he is sleepy) he gets cross when he finishes the bottle as he knows there is less than usual so how on earth am I going to drop it! I figure that it will either need to be done very gradually i.e. 1 oz every week or so or I will have to leave him for a night and just see what he does. I cannot imagine giving him 2 or 3 oz and him going down ok. Hmmm - any ideas???
Thanks x

If he wakes and gets cross when there is no more (yes, DS did this too!), then I'd slow it right down.  You're starting early so you've got plenty of time.   Maybe reduce by 30mls every five days.  Just to be on the safe side.
