How to handle 6mo growth spurt ?

Hi, my 6mo DS suddenly wake 2-3 times at night ( first wake up at 8.30pm, and the rest would be 11.30am / 2am / 4am - varies ). Previously he would sleep through the night from 6.30pm to 6am with 1x DF. Suddenly this past a week he starts the NW. I was thinking that it could be a 6mo growth spurt. I've introduced him solid for 5 days. So far I always feed him everytime he wakes up. I read many posts that also have the similar problem with my DS during this age. I wonder if anyone could give me some advices & suggestion how to handle this developmental changes ? Will it be a habitual waking if I keep feeding him ? Thanks before !

A growth spurt won't last longer than about a week, so at that point you can start looking to drop those feeds again. Is he very hungry when he wakes up? Is he tolerating the solids well? I'm wondering if the solids are causing him some discomfort, what do you think?

Hi Anna,thanks for the reply. He only BF for around 3 minutes at the 8.30pm wake up then back to sleep. While for the 3am NW, he seems so hungry. The NW started before I introduce solids, so I think it shouldnt be a problem. As he is somewhere on day 6 of solid, he still have 2 course meal. Do you think its not sufficient to fill his tummy ? I read one book, they mentioned that there is a night cycle development by the time a baby enter his 6mo age. Could it be the problem ?

I wouldn't be in a hurry to add more solids, there is way more calories in breastmilk than in fruit or veggies or a few spoons of cereal. If he wasn't really hungry at the 8.30pm waking, could that have been due to OT?

Currently he has 2.5 hour activity time, 2 X 1.5h nap and 1 X catnap somewhere between 5pm. The big but is that I dont know exactly what time he wakes up every morning. One day I sneak into his room at 4.30am and surprisingly he woke up and quietly sucking his thumb, on the other day he woke up at 5am, 5.30am. It varies day by day for though I consistently put him to bed at 6.30pm. Now I never check his wake up time again, but stick on the first nap at somewhere around 8am - 8.30am ( and he always looks very very sleepy as if he has been wake up so early ). Do you think it could be the trigger or it sounds more like a 6mo growth spurt ?

He's napping well so it doesn't sound like OT is a problem, unless he's putting up a lot of resistance to his naps? Sounds like a growth spurt...

Hi Anna, since I did PU/PD 2 weeks ago, he is now going to bed so easily. Previously he had nurse to sleep association. Last night he only woke up once at 8.30pm and drained my breast. I gave him his DF at 10.30pm and he took 100ml. Let's see tonight... tommorow would be exactly 1 week since his NW.

Hi there ...
I had a question about the PU/PD method you used.  I was trying PU/PD to settle the baby and I feel he got addicted to being picked up by me and me at his side until he slept.  I think I became his prop!

So how exactly does one do PU/PD?  Do I walk away a little until his cries escalate?

Hi Sejal, how old is our LO now ? For me, I wouldnt walk away. As my DS had a nursing to sleep association, so he would scream and cry so badly by the time I put him on his crib. So at the beginning, I would pat his bump around 5-10 minutes. At that time he would screamed. If it gets escalate ( real emotional cry ), I would pick him up, pat his back until he is quite calm. If it has been 1 minute since I picked him up but he hasnt stop crying, I would put him down to his crib, and pick him up again. Do you think you pick your LO too often or during mantra cry and hold him too long ?

Hi everyone, today has been the 8th day since my LO's night waking.

Last night he whimper at around 9pm and back to sleep. I gave him DF at 10.30pm and he started to wake up at 2am. I nursed him and changed his diaper and he wouldnt back to sleep until 4am. I was thinking about several posibilities  :
a. Developmental milestones ( what time it usually last ? )
b. Night cycle development ( anyone had this experience at 6mo ? )
c. Teething ( he cried, but didnt seem to be that hurt )
d. Vaccination ( he had a vaccination a day before his 1st NW, but should it last this long ? )

Any advice would be appreciated...

Hi Anna, last night he woke up at 8.30pm crying. I was out at that time, so my husband offered him my expressed breastmilk in a bottle. But he was so very upset and sobbing. I back home at 9pm and nursed him for around 4 minutes, then he fall back to sleep.

Can he settle without feeding? Could BF have become a prop for night wakings? There's surely no way he's hungry at 8.30pm after going to sleep after BF at 7?
