If you're in the UK, Mothercare sell Miracle Blankets as 'swaddle blankets'. They're the exact same design.

Giorgina, in the UK, the official advice is firmly to put babies on their backs to sleep until 6 months. That said, there are several mums on here who have sworn by tummy sleep, and my own LO slept much better on his tummy after about 3 months. As long as there are no other SIDS risk factors, if it were me (and it was) I'd try it.

My 2 month old baby absolutely will not tolerate swaddling. She struggles and cries and it just makes getting her to sleep more difficult. Its already very hot here in Malta (25 degrees plus!) so that may be why she doesn't like it. To be honest I've stopped swaddling her now as I'm also scared of overheating. She does take longer to settle but it seems the only option!

Hi rgatt,
have you tried leaving your baby in just a diaper and then swaddling her?  It is warm here in Toronto Canada too.  That's would I would do.  And what are you swaddling with?  Maybe try a lightweight fabric to swaddle her in.

Remember that before they were born they spent 100% of their time in 98.5F/37C degrees with 100% humidity!

OMG - just had to join in the conversation.  I think I've just had a "eurika" moment with the swaddling!  My 6 wk old DS has been waking 6 times in the night and I only count night as between 10:30 pm DF and 6am First feed!  Anyway, after reading this thread I decided I must just need a better swaddling blanket.  So I went out to buy a miracle blanket but none in the shops.  Then I came back and for the afternoon sleep got out the blanket I had been using and wrapped it really tightly with both arms down by his side.  Immediate positive effect!!  He dropped off in my arms and I've now put him down.  Woke after 5 mins and I went and resettled him.  Now he's down again (10 mins and counting).

So I think the moral of the story for me (assuming I'm not posting too soon!) is to wrap those arms down as tight as possible.

Please let this be the answer to our NW's!!!

Hi Anna,
I assume you are based in the Uk with you mentioning regs on tummy sleeping.
I have a 4 1/2mth old and I currently swaddle her. She's a big girl though and is bursting out of every swaddle I use! I've tried aussie, sleeping bags etc but she wakes herself up rubbing her eyes. Since I've started swaddling I find that she goes to sleep independently like a dream, whereas with anything else she just cries so much and then when she does drop off she wakes herself back up again within 20mins.

I have been wondering whether to try tummy sleeping but am quite apprehensive about it. Is she too young to do it yet do you think? Should I wait till she can roll over? Did you find that you had to do Shh/pat to get your LO to settle?

All these rules that the HV tell you drive me potty.....so much for mothers intuition.....I feel like I'm constantly questioning myself!!

thank you

Carrie

Hi Carrie! Yes in the UK here. Can she raise her head up when she's doing tummy time, like in a mini-push up? I was a bit paranoid so I bought one of those Angelcare sensor monitors on ebay - it went off on a false alarm a couple of times which freaked me right out, and I stopped using it after he turned 6 months. I also read up on risk factors for SIDS and there were none which applied to us.

Yes, he still needed to be settled with shush-pat, but he preferred a pat on his back or a 'butt wiggle' so it was actually easier to do when he was tummy sleeping.

Hi Anna,
Thanks for the swift response!
Yes she can lift her head up when she's on her tummy and just the other day she learnt to roll front to back but can't yet do back to front. There are no other SIDS risk factors. I think I'm going to try and 'fashion' something so that I can extend her miracle blanket for now as swaddling has been a dream for us.....out comes the dusty sewing machine!

There's a tutorial online for extending miracle blankets - we used it too (BIG boy). I'll see if I can find the link. Alternatively you can just cut the very bottom of the 'pocket' open so that her little feet stick out the end!

Hi,
Our DS was a real little "Houdini" and always grunted and groaned until he managed to get unswaddled - no matter how tight we swaddled him. At around 4-5 weeks we started to leave one arm out and that solved the problem! He then had that arm free to find fingers etc - not that he was any good at that back then.
Worth a try for you anyway!
Good Luck

P.S. We tried to remember to swap arms as we noticed he would turn his head to whichever side the arm was out on.  :o

Hi all,

Well i just recieved my miracle blankets today, so she is on her first nap using it!  She has gone down a treat. She had her usual whinge, but i didn't need to go in as she settled herself after about 3 mins. I will see how she gets on after the first sleep cycle and see if she escapes!

Will keep you posted!
