Oh, ok. I'll do that. So I just put the mattress near his crib and when he wakes up comfort him with just using words? Should I help him find his paci again? He usually starts crying when he cant find it. What should I do when he's waking before I've even gone to bed, actually he goes to sleep before I'm home from work most days...

I'd give him a decent chance to find his paci first because you want him to learn how to do that without your help.  You can encourage him with words while he's doing it, like "Your paci is close by sweetie, just feel around - you'll find it."

Just soothe like normal for NWs before you go to bed.  I'm hoping by having an instant response with you on the mattress it might get him out of the habit and start getting used to sleeping for longer stretches.

Are we sure there aren't any medical problems? Reflux usually doesn't affect LOs at this age, but just want to make sure that it isn't a factor -- frequent NWs like this are very common for 'fluxers and sucking is their preferred way of soothing the burning in their throat.  Also, do you see any sign of teeth? The canines usually come in around this age and they are ultra painful.  I realize the waking for the bottle's been going on for ages but it's unusual for a LO to continue to wake so frequently after the reward has been removed.

He did suffer from reflux when he was younger, and was on medication for it until about 8 mos old. And today I did notice that his canines (those are the ones right in front of the molars, right?) on the top are coming out. Which explains his grumpyness, and probably why he continues to wake. I've given him Tylenol, but will probably wait until those come in before continuing the sleep training... I hope it's not too bad...

I would try Motrin instead of Tylenol -- longer acting and helps with inflammation.  Tylenol never helped with my son's teething pain.

Good to know teeth are involved! Also, did you know teething can make reflux worse? We actually went back ON our reflux meds at age 2 b/c of the 2 yr molars after having been OFF the meds for over a year.  So, watch for signs of refluxing (you can see your kid regurgitate after eating even) and then you might talk with doc about going back on or doing an OTC remedy for a little while until those teeth are done.

Oh wow, I did not know that. I will definitely keep an eye out. I have a wonderful update! I don't know if it was just a fluke, since we have suspended trying more sleep training until those teeth come in, but... Last night he slept from 8 -7am only waking one time because he dropped his paci on the floor!! I woke up at 4:30 frantic that he hadn't woken yet! I rushed in and checked on him and he was sound asleep. I hope this lasts!!!

Yay! It just may have taken awhile for his body to adjust to the lack fo feeds at night! I hope you get continued success!

It may be a 2 steps forward/1 step back, so don't get too upset if he regresses here and there. That's to be expected.

Update to the update! EJ's sleeping most of the night now!! I am ecstatic! He goes to bed quite easily, though he is still attached to his paci (another hurdle to cross I guess). We give him a bath, some nights he has warm milk from his sippy, read a few books and we put him down. Within 15 minutes, he's asleep. He'll usually stay asleep until about 2:30a when he cant find his paci and needs some help getting it to settle down. Some nights he doesn't even wake up. We are still dealing with those teeth coming in (he's getting all 4 at once) but Motrin helps and he's been sleeping quite well. His naps have gotten better too. I am so happy, since I am now officially in my 3rd trimester and am extra tired, so the uniterrupted sleep is great!

Thank you sooo much for all of your help and support! I couldn't have done it without you!  :-*

I am SO pleased!!!! You can wait until those teeth are in to tackle the paci, if you want.  With that oral pain the sucking is probably very soothing.  I have a feeling when the teeth aren't an issue any more you are going to be astonished at the good sleep you get!

Congratulations!

BTW, you may want to post your 'success story' on the Prop board! The bottle was a prop for you and there are LOTS of moms who would love to hear how you guys got rid of it and started getting better sleep!

Thanks again! I think I will post over there. I never thought we'd leave the bottle so soon...
