Hi everyone,

I thought I'd post an update as things have gone a bit pear shaped again in the weight gain department.  After a huge gain of 300ml two weeks ago, our LO actually lost 60gms at yesterdays weight check.  She is now well below the 3rd percentile at 5.630kg, and also seems to have slowed down in terms of her length growth too - although she is exactly on the 50th percentile for her length-weight.

She is now 5months 4week and has just started on solids - avocado, sweet potato and squash so far - and is getting around 2Tbs of these twice a day.  I'm still feeding her 4-5 full feeds and she gets 210ml of expressed milk as a dream feed, as well as about 20ml of expressed milk twice a day mixed with her Gaviscon.

The Peds all say she looks like a happy, healthy little girl and she's meeting (and exceeding) her milestones, but they are concerned that she is so small.  If she hasn't gained well at the next check in a week then they want to run some tests, starting with urine.  Does anyone know what they could be testing for?

They've also suggested starting banana as a high calorie food, but I'd love to hear of any other high fat foods suitable for first tastes - she seems keen to try anything and everything so far!

Thanks for listening again - hearing that others have gone through the same thing is always so reassuring!

ps. Mum101 - what company are you working for?  Because we get so few products from NZ I try to support products that come from Oz instead so it's likely I'm one of the expats using your products!  And it is soooo hot right now!  I haven't left the house for days as it's getting close to 50 degrees C now - not much fun when you're trying to get out with a LO.

Check the solids board for some ideas of high calorie foods (I know some moms who do baby led weaning will give things like toast with some olive oil on top or something).

They'll probably check to make sure that she's not peeing out nutrients - that her kidneys are working well, etc., that she's not anemic, and that it's not a digestion problem.  With some people, even though you eat lots, you still lose weight if your body has trouble digesting and taking in the nutrients.  Celiacs can have that problem, for instance.

Big ((hugs)).  Hope this settles out soon.
