Short A time for 4 month old
« on: June 15, 2009, 20:47:32 pm »
My LO just turned 4 months and have been trying to help her past the 45 minute nap plague by really reading her cues.  She starts yawning after about 1 hour 15 minutes even if I change the scenery, etc.  This seems so short for a 4 month old.  Naps have been better though.  She almost always wakes at the 45 minute mark and can put herself back to sleep.  Although the last few days she will wake up at 45 minutes and play in her crib for about another 45 minutes and then sleep again making our routine close to 4 hours.  It's almost like she tires herself out quickly, sleeps, plays, sleeps, then eats. It seems kind of strange because I enjoy playing with her and she has been doing a lot of playing/fussing in her crib.  Should I try to extend her A time?  Or does it seem okay that she sometimes does two shorter A times (1 in the crib by herself) within one EASY making it EASASE?
Thanks,
Harmony

I was in the same boat as you at this age.  I played around with A times and he was doing 1 h 45 min for the longest time.  I then shortened it to 1 h 30 and he began sleeping for 1h 30.  I also did W2S alot of the time to.  Play around with you A time by decreasing or increasing by 5 min and see what you get.

if she is waking up and happily playing in her crib for that long when she wakes up, i would suspect she needs more A time. if she is showing tired signs early then try gradually extending her time with something low key like a walk around house or garden, reading a story, looking out the window etc for just an extra 5 mins after she shows her tired signs, then straight into her room for wind down routine.

Hi ya- we had the 45 min nap monster around 4 months too- we extended the A time and after a week we reverted back to 2 hr naps.   Try 1.5 hours and see how that goes and then extend by 5 to 10 mins every 3 days till you get to 2 hrs.   I also tried W2S but am not coinvinced that worked.

It will get better and it is just a phase.

Cheers

Thank you all so much for your suggestions.  I am going to play around with the A times in the next few days and see what we get :)
