Room Darkening
« on: June 16, 2009, 12:01:25 pm »
Does anyone have any good solutions that really work?!?! My 2 y.o dd's room faces east. She's been getting up super early b/c of the sun (well, at least I believe so :P). On her windows, I already have mini blinds, a supposed room darkening drape (that doesn't work well at all) and then, over that, a sheer dark blue drape (which I dislike but it helps a bit). Even with all this, light still comes in! Not to mention, it's not the prettiest looking window coverings and it's difficult to open the windows. So....I need a good fix!!

Anyone have any type of shade, blind, drape that really makes it stay nice and dark in there in the early morning?!?

Tin foil does wonder but it doesn't look very nice.  We did that for a while for dd's room.  Then we installed black-out shades (really thick vinyl) and has a heavy gold-brocade curtain.

I've been having a nightmare with this as well - and my rooms faces west!!

I'm on the tin foil at the moment but need something 'nicer' as the window faces the street and they neighbours DO NOT LIKE!!

I saw on the internet some balckout you can velco around the window frame. Again not too pretty - but not too ugly either. I doubt you would want to remove it every day but could to air the room etc.

I bought a length of blackout material.  I machined-sewed the soft-sided part of the velcro to the top edge and fixed the bristly bit to a part of the window frame above the glass.  The blackout fits 'over' the window and pretty much touches the glass.  I fix it at the bottom with just a couple of patches of velcro but you could do it all across the bottom too.

i have blackout curtain lining too.  In the morning, I just have to fold the blackout lining up and since the PVC window frame is white and the velco strip is white, you don't see it.

Did that make sense?

The tin foil works best if you want to open the windows easily, if you do it carefully, the windows will open with no problem.  We did it and my daughters room is like a cave and it did help a lot!

We use this: http://www.baabaablinds.com as well as a normal blackout blind that's hung in her room. It's also great for taking away on visits / hols.
