I am the same, if he (or more like we since he's not into books yet  ::)) like a certain author, we'll pick up a whole bunch because we know we'll like them.

How about asking around to other moms to see what's good?  Our favorite author is Julia Donaldson (we have 5 of her books - they're a lot of fun to read and have lots of rhyming and wonderful illustrations :)).  We also really like Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and the Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  Not sure if these are the kinds you're looking for, but maybe someone else will have more suggestions.  :)

Sandra Boynton is a good author.  Uses lots of rhyming and silly stories.
Lynley Dodd also has good books.  Dr Suess, Robert Munsch, Mercer Mayer, Stan & Jan Berenstain are all good ones too.
DS1 is all over construction machinery, space shuttles, emergency vehicles and people, and planes.  So any non-fiction book that is about any of those is a good bet for us.
I found the original non-PC Noddy books are ridiculously priced on Amazon so I won't buy them there.  Shame as DS1 loved the Noddy books when we were at my parent's in NZ.  Just don't like the non-PC versions.

You'll probably find that any book about a subject that your LO likes will be a hit.  Also any books of favourite TV shows is another way to get a good book.

just requested Mike Mulligan from the library.  It looks perfect for DS!

Two books that we love are called "I love you, Mommy" and "I love you, Daddy" by Jillian Harker.
Also big fans of Dr. Seuss.

Good luck finding Grimms, Mukta.
A friend of ours said it took her moving heaven & earth to get the book of Grimms fairytales for DS1.
Something to do with the fact that they are full of violence and nastiness (ie witches being burned in ovens).  I dunno if they have a PC-version of Grimms, but that may be what you end up with.

We are SUCH bookworms over here!!  we LOVE to read...and Mukta you HAVE to get our favorite series of books, by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman.  It is a series of different books about a big bear..there is "Bear's New Freind", "Bear Gets Sick" "Bear Snores On"   "Bear Wakes Up"  "Bear's New Friend"  "Bear Feels Sick" and "Bear feels Scared".   These are by far our favorites.  Some (not all) of them come in board books, cuz dd still cannot *always* be trusted not to rip a page.
These books are so rhythmic, they rhyme in a way that makes them so fun to read...the themes are so sweet, and all of bears friends are so helpful and loving.  Start with "Bear Snores On"...that was the first one, and you can "meet" everyone that way.  It's about him hibernating, and no matter what happens, he just keeps sleeping, even as his friends plan a party around him. It is the sweetest thing, and dd adores the rhythm of it...so do I!

Also, Charles Fuge has sevearl books about a little Wombat...try "Sometimes I like to Curl up in a Ball".  Adorable.

Go get a Bear Book....or I will find you and mail you one!!!

So I guess our friend didn't buy the book online.  No issue getting it from Amazon!
This is the link to the Amazon.com page of the particular book of Grimms we have.  The print is very small, and the pictures are few and far between - despite being "Fully illustrated" (according to the title)
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Brothers-Grimm-Fairy-Tales/dp/B001IADOJ0/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245347418&sr=8-15
We haven't used it yet for DS1 as he is very picture orientated still.

I'll second Sandra Boynton. She "gets" kids. We have pretty much everything she's ever published, with only a couple exceptions. Even the CD's are cute! We got Philadelphia Chickens cheap second-hand, and besides the songs being adorable and having a number of celebrity contributors who are marvellous (The Bacon Brothers Band, for example). :)), there are a bunch of her books set to music. (We like to sing Snuggle Puppy!  :-*)

"The Gruffalo" and "Going on a Bear Hunt" are huge fav with my 3yr olds in kindergarten, along with the Mr Men series. I second the Dr Suess books as well as the kids love hearing the nonsense word and rhyming - plus it's a real challenge for you as a parent to read a page straight with no mistakes!! Like a tongue twister!
There was also a Dinasaur themed book (a boy's toy dinasaur came to life) was a huge hit with the boys - can't remember the titles tho, so if anyone knows these books?

Most of our favs have already been mentioned!!

Julia Donaldson's books are great.  As are the Giles Andreae series (Rumble in the jungle, commotion in the ocean etc.).

Andi, the dinosaur ones are the 'Harry and the dinosaur' series by Ian Whybrow.  They're great too!

Can also get some good bargains on amazon if you look for the other sellers books rather than the ones straight from amazon. I also totally recommend going to charity shops and if you don't already use your local library.. never ending books and free to borrow for LOs.

The Book People has some fab packs of books for bargain prices... I got this set http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10051_166639_100_59607__category_
for Woo a week or so ago and the books are all gorgeous and he adores them... such a bargain too!

Love this thread!
We're book people too!
I LOVE the Richard Scarry books- with Huckle and Lowly- some many little details to look at and loads of silly little things- like pickle cars.
For photo- info books, DK publishers makes nice board books, and some more advanced books as well- nice photos of animals, trucks, etc. "My first Truck book" ETc... Very simple, but LOs love the photos.
P.D. Eastman wrote/illustrated "Go Dog Go" and it's one of Nick's favorites. Again, simple, but great for beginner readers, simple concepts of colors, up and down, over and under, etc.
I'll think some more...

We love Robert Munsch and Richard Scarry and the little wombat series too!  We really really really love the Jillian Jiggs series too - fantastic rhyming for them - author is Pheobe Gilman.  Awesome books.  Keep in mind too that at the used book store for next to nothing (or the dollar store) you can pick up little golden books, and i can't believe how books i loved as a kid are still a bit hit with my  kids.

But for sure Munsch, Scarry and Gilman - all great stuff.  Oh, and someone mentioned Sandra Boyton, she is fantastic too but I find our guys have already gone beyond the 'depth' of her stories and want longer more involved stories.  they will sit for hours listening to Robert Munsch stuff like Stephanie's Ponytail or Alligator Baby - they LOVE that stuff.

DH has been trying to find some of the Harry and the Midnight....series but we are having a hard time finding them.

Margaret Wise Brown.  Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny (my favorite book of all).  For one of my baby showers, we did a children's books theme.  We got about 20 books, many of them signed by the people who gave them to us.  It was a nice way to do it.  Agree with the previous comments about Grimms.  Perhaps it is best to view that as classic literature understanding the times in which they were written, as opposed to "happy, feel good" children's books.  Having said that, we do have a copy.
