10.5 month old dropping second nap?
« on: June 16, 2009, 20:32:05 pm »
Hello,
I'm looking for some help with my 10.5 month old refusing his second nap lately.  I'm not sure if he is 'dropping' it or if it is the teething, but he won't settle for most second naps.  The problem is that he can't seem to last long in the morning before his first nap - he is back down for a nap within 2.5 hours of being awake and sleeps for 1.5-2.0 hrs.  He is then up for the entire rest of the day which can mean 8 or 9 hours!!!  He settles for night sleep fine (usually).  It does look like he's getting his first molars but not sure if that would be the problem here!?  I guess what I'm looking for is some advice re: if others think it sounds like he's dropping his second nap and if so, how do I prolong the first nap in the morning to ensure his awake time at the end of the day is not so long?  I'm scared to put off his first nap for fear of him becoming overtired which can be a complete nightmare.  Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Funny that just a few seconds ago I posted the SAME question. LOL! I am going thru the same thing with my 9 month old and for the past 2 days he's also been dropping his second nap and takes forever to go down (for naps and bed!) His top teeth are also coming in (I can see it) and I'm blaming it on that but I'm also curious as to what age they are supposed to drop their 2nd naps... hmmm...... :-\

I read in the Weissbluth book that children tend to (though not all) drop a nap between 12-15 months of age...I forgot the percentages but something like 20% of children at 12 months are taking 1 nap, but by 15 months something like 70% of them are taking 1 nap...I think 9.5 mo is probably a little young but my friend's little girl dropped hers at 10 mos.

Routine varies a bit depending on what time we start the day but generally it looks like this (minus the 'E'):

6:00-6:30 - Awake for the day
8:00-8:30 - 1st Nap (1.5 - 2.0hrs)
10:00-10:30 - Awake
1:00-1:30 - TRY to put down for 2nd nap (not too long ago he went down fine and slept for anywhere from 40 minutes to 1.5 hrs)
6:00-7:00 - To bed for the night.

I have experimented with his 2nd nap, thinking he was UT so will sometimes re-settle over the course of an hour.  Or sometimes I'll realize that he is UT so just get him up and try to put him down again a bit later (keeping things low key in the meantime).  At times I'll second guess though, thinking maybe he is OT and that is why he can not settle because the odd time he WILL sleep for 40 minutes or so.  I don't know.  He seems to be able to function on a ridiculously small amount of sleep though, for example today he has been awake for 8.5 hrs!!!!  He does get clingy and 'needy' in the afternoons though and VERY hyper by the day's end.
