nutramigen formula
« on: June 16, 2009, 22:28:33 pm »
Just after some advise ladies my LO was diagnosed with reflux around 6 weeks ago, he is now 3 months old. My HV advised that I changed his milk to cow and gate infasoy, this seems to have worked a little with the crying spells, now reduced from 7 to about 3 hours.

I was also prescribed nutramigen from my GP but didnt try it as I had only just started infasoy (people are now saying I shouldnt use this as he could be allergic to this too), today I am at my wits end and dont know weatherto try him on this, he has cried all day and takes his bottle but cries when I wind him and after his feed for around an hour, thing is its a scream, red face sweating etc when he is asleep in my arms he is always flinching and stars crying

Can anyone help please im desperate.  :-[ :'(

**HUGS** Sorry you are going through this tough time right now.  I know most babies with an intolerance to dairy also cannot tolerate soy, but some can.  How long have you been on the infasoy?

I would try the nutramigen if I were you, L was MSPI and even though I BF if I accidently ate dairy or soy she would be very ill but she refused the nutramigen because of the taste so I would start it sooner than later, you will probably see a reduction is symptoms really quickly.

I feel so bad for you because I remember exactly what is was like and none of the medical proffessionals were very helpful, it is the worst to see your baby like this  :'( Honestly give the new milk a go, when I cut soy and dairy out of my diet Leorah showed a huge improvement within 24 hours, after a few days the women at my mother group said she was like a new baby! She actually started sleeping without jerking awake!

Please update how it goes  :-*

Well I am thinking skatty I might give it ago from tomorrow a fresh day, I went to my GP and told him that he wouldnt take the milk so he precribed wysoy but as I said it no differnt than infasoy.... Thing with Finn is that one minute he is ok and the next its like he is in terrible pain, I know he wouldnt take the Nutramigen last time but I am going to give it one last shot because im so down with it all lately.

What does MSPI mean im new to all this :-)

Thanks for your help x

MSPI stands for milk/soy protein intolerant, and is usually why one is prescribed the special formulas, that or one is allergic.  Either an intolerance or allergy.  If you little one didn't like the taste you can add it slowly, that's what I had to do with the Neocate formula.  1oz at a time each day until he was fully on Neocate.  Please keep us updated, would love to see how this goes.

We only stayed on soy for about 10 days before making the decision that it hadn't made a lick of difference, and got straight onto the Nutramigen.  It really does taste nasty and will take a while for your LO to drink it, so all the more reason to start with it as soon as possible. Start making his normal sized bottles but use once scoop of Nutramigen in place of one of the scoops of soy. (So if making 6 ounce bottles, use 6oz water, one scoop Nutramigen and five scoops soy).  After 3 days, increase that to two scoops Nutramigen, etc. The more Nutramigen you get into the bottle, the longer it may take him to drink it. I remember it only took 2 days before we moved up to 2 scoops, then 3 or 4 days from there on, but when we were on just one scoop left of soy it took DS a LONG time, about 10 - 14 days I think, before he would drink it all and I could drop the last scoop of soy.  So don't lose heart, just go slowly and patiently and he will eventually get used to the taste.

Yeah, definitely give it a try.  If the soy would have made a difference you would have DEFINITELY seen it by now, 8 weeks later.  When I put my son on Neocate I noticed in the first week he was doing better and was completely like a normal baby after 4 weeks.

I did see a difference with the soy, BM were alot less and not runny sorry TMI. But I was worried because a number of people said Soy shouldnt be used for babies under the age of 6 months. I started Finn on Nutramigen this morning and he doesnt seem too bad, he normally has 6 ounces but only took 4. I feel so sorry for him though because it tastes distgusting doesnt it. I keep thinking shall I just leave him on soy, but I just dont know.

I feel so low with it all because no one can give me a straight answer at the doctors!:-(

He drank the nutramigen so it can't be that bad for him just different, remember babies don't have our taste buds and if it means his tummy will stop cramping then it is worth it. If he is intolerant of soy then having it everyday as his milk could mean he can develope a much more serious allergy to it later in life. I understand about the docs, my doc was decent enough to admit she didn't really know about MSPI and that she'd keep it in mind for future patients! Give it a good chance, I want to hear about how happy he is and how much better he sleeping soon  ;) :-*

The only way they can test for intolerances is by giving the culprit and watching for symptoms, we said no thanks we don't need to put Leorah though that as we already knew she was. I think if he isn't crying and uncomfortable after his feedings like he is now, sleeps better without any jerking and is suddenly a happy baby you will know. Leorah seemed an unhappy baby until I eliminated dairy and soy from my diet, the change was incredible. Maybe even 24 hours from now you will see some change, positive vibes coming your way  :-*
