Help! Do I wake a sleeping baby?
« on: June 21, 2009, 18:48:18 pm »
Hello & help!
A friend suggested the baby whisperer book last week.  I have been reading reading reading.  We had already been trying to get our 5 wk old (almost 6 weeks) on a feed, wake, sleep cycle every 2.5 to 3.5 hours.  We have had little success.  Sawyer was staying awake for 2 - 3 hours before going down & would then sleep way past his daytime feedings.  Now I'm realizing that he should only have about 30 min activity time before he gets overstimulated & am looking for cues.  (the little guy rarely yawns!)
So my questions are - should I wake Sawyer during the day if he isn't up after 3 hours?  How do I keep him awake to get a decent feed?  And is it OK that during the day he goes right back to sleep sometimes?  Also, at night, he would sleep 4 hours & some but after 3 hours he has gas that wakes him up.  Last night he'd grunt & toot & then we could shh/pat him back to sleep & he'd sleep another hour. We've tried gas drops . . . ah!
Help!

hi sawyersmomma,

welcome to bw and congrats on your newborn!

i am popping your post over to the general sleep forum to get you more advice over there.  in terms of waking up - the thing is with a young baby, they tend to only do one or two quite long stretches over the course of 24 hours. so if you don't wake him after roughly 3 hours' cycle during the day, you might end up doing shorter cycles at night and longer ones during the day. not ideal for most of us.  this being said you do not need to be terribly vigilant about it - if there is a particular nap where you feel like he really needs to catch up on sleep, etc - i would let him sleep.

as for gas, i have a newborn too and we are going through the same thing. it is so tiring!! after every night feed i wind and bicycle his legs and rub his tummy in clockwise circles. i also try to burp him until his body is totally limp (just by rubbing though, not patting his back which is too stimulating). this being said, we too have an hour or so without fail where he is really struggling in the middle of the night. it will pass though!! i had it with my first son too, even worse - by sometime between 12 and 16 weeks it should be gone and his digestion should hopefully straighten itself out. x

Hello!
Thanks for your response.  The gas seems to be getting better & he's going down much easier for most naps.  He doesn't seem to have too much awake time though.
Any tricks on how to wake him gently or keep him awake but not overstimulated?
Thanks!

Hello!

Tracey suggests that to wake a baby gently you sit them up straight and their little eyes pop open...

Other than that i dont know what else you would to do keep him up for his A time, perhaps sing a song that involves using his hands with a little bit of gentle clapping? something like that perhaps?

also suggested by bw is to change his diaper, and/or massage his hands...
